Take for example the talk of Arabs "saving" greek heritage, as if the actual greeks (the Byzantine Empire) never existed during those times. Byzantium still existed and still preserved the ancient Greek texts. The Byzantine colonies in Southern Italy were an alternative conduit through which classical Greek knowledge reached western Europe. The Byzantine Empire ruled Italy during the 6 century and Southern Italy until the 12 century, so it had plenty of impact on "Western Europe". It had big cultural influence in Europe, for example the Cyrillic Alphabet that you see today in Russia and some Eastern European countries was created by Byzantine scholars for the european slavs, it spread christianity in Eastern Europe and Russia, according to some sources the first European University was the University of Constantinople, founded in 425, the biggest city in Europe was Constantinople, jews were treated fairly well in Byzantium, the largest cathedral in the world until 1520 was Hagia Sophia in Constantinople etc. The golden byzantine coin, the nomisma, was the "euro" of european commerce until the eleventh century.
