Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Blackjack, Banking, and the Risk of Not Taking Enough Risk

The question is: Did the US banking system really take on that much risk? If you know that your too big to fail, is it still risk or a license to steal?

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : China's Statistical Factory

I believe that it was Martin Luther that stated, "Reason is a whore." The only reason that he said that was because Reason's sluttier sister; Statistics, wasn't available at the time.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Personals Checks, and the Trouble with Market Eschatology

I always pay my bills by check. While I don't get the canceled check back, I do get a scanned image. This was invaluable last year, when Toyota Finance conveniently lost a prepayment. The codes stamped on the back told my bank everything it needed to prove that Toyota cashed the check.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Cliche Watch: Less Worse, etc.

"implied volatility indicates X is stabilizing" - The only thing implied volatility indicates is that Black-Scholes is flawed. "manufacturing capacity/inventory improvements"- The only time industrial inventories are accurate is at audit time. "Bottoming process"- Like we've really been here before enough to make a process of it. "It's only kinky the first time" - No matter how many times the prosecutor uses the phrase, "midget dominatrix," it still sounds bad.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Are U.S. Investors Pathologically Optimistic?

Optimism is one explanation. But the idiocy of autopilot is the one that I prefer. http://www.ici.org/stats/mf/flows_data_2009.pdf

Let me see if I've got this right. Retail investors get hosed by the market. Institutional investors get hosed by the market. I think I just deduced the meaning of life: We are only here for GS's benefit.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : China Says U.S. Needs Adult Economic Supervision

I think we are all misinterpreting the phrase "adult economic supervision." Upon reinspection, it's clear that the Chinese are pushing to have Ron Jeremy installed as the next Fed chairman.

I expect that a very enthusiastic discussion regarding IMFing the US is taking place in Washington and Wall Street, as well. The privatization of monopolies like public services is too lucrative of a gravy train to be neglected.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Credit Card Offers and the Dow

I miss the 0% offers. The last one I received was from Wachovia, which I accepted. They sent the checks that proclaimed that I could use them "like cash" with no interest for 9 months. They weren't fooling. I wrote one for $10k to myself and bought a $10k, 6mo CD for from Wachovia. I like easy money.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Readings

Your link about CDSs was interesting. By taking a large CDS position against a company's default, wouldn't I cause my counterparty to short the company to hedge, which ultimately helps my position. I'm going to have to think about that one for awhile.
