Hannes Schneider was the father of "Make turns, not war" his experience in WWI led him to the conclusion that if everybody skied then there would be no war.

RateSkiAreas.Com : Where to ski in New England?...Sugarbush, VT

Once I was riding up on the tram at Cannon (the Extreme Team had been there filming themselves jumping out of the tram earlier in the week) and Dan asked me if I could show them how to ski to the top of the Old Man of the Mountain so they could film themselves jumping of it! I skied with them to the hiking path and pointed the way to the late lamented stone face. Those boys were crazy back in those days. I was reminiscing with Glen Plake at the Ski Expo Show in Denver last week about the Brother's Extreme.
