Thank you SO much for taking the time to respond. If this is actually the case and I had just let things lie with the earlier replies I would have been seriously pissed upon getting home and finding that I'm stuck with a phone that can't be rebooted away from a computer. I'll deal with poor battery performance over a tethered only, and just keep my fingers crossed for a more elegant jailbreak down the road.

Thanks, I did read it before asking the question. Twice. Since the blog doesn't have an exact date of when it was posted (only says "4 weeks ago"), I wasn't sure if it came before or after all the tech news reports about brand new phones being shipped with a bootrom that was supposedly jailbreak proof. Being a technical layman, and because it doesn't specifically use the same language as the news articles (no mention of "bootrom" or iBoot-359.3.2 anywhere), I had no idea whether it specifically addressed this or not. So based on patrick's replies (thank you!) this means that even if I get a new phone with the anti-jailbreak bootrom, I'll still be able to use PwnageTool just like I did with my pre-bootrom protected 3GS? I heard that early use of blackra1n on the new chip resulted in a phone that couldn't be rebooted without being connected to the computer, and often required re-jailbreaking on each reboot. Will I face the same thing with PwnageTool connected to a Mac? Thanks in advance for your help and insights. Sometimes people do RTFM and still have questions. :)

Can somebody PLEASE respond, posted twice last week without a reply and I have to bring my phone in for exchange or battery replacement... I have a jailbroken phone that is having battery problems and I am covered for an exchange at the Apple Store. If I'm given a new phone, will PwnageTool be able to jailbreak it? (I'm primarily concerned with jailbreak only, not unlock)

Okay when I load Cydia it says "This Device Has a 3.1 ECID SHSH on file". So does this mean I am on the "unlock train"? If I remove all traces of jailbreaking before bringing the phone in to an apple store, with teh SHSH on file with Cydia will I be able to re-jailbreak my phone without problems? Interestingly, I could have sworn that I gave Cydia the okay to store my SHSH before I upgraded from 3.0.x to 3.1, so I'm not sure why it's saying I have a 3.1 ECID SHSH on file. Does it continue to upload and update the info on file after each upgrade? Thanks for your help!

Oh wow... any word on how availability is now on those older phones at Apple Store locations in big cities? (I'm in NYC) The whole point of going back to the store is because I'm pretty damn sure I've got one of the early phones with a borked battery. Even with push/bluetooth/wifi/location/3G etc. turned off I'm not getting anywhere near the battery life reported in benchmarks when running video on this thing. Given the choice between low battery life and a new, but jailbreak-proof phone, I'll stick with even a meager 2.5 hours of usage between charges every time!

When I launch Cydia it says "This device has a 3.1 SHSH on file"... does this mean I haven't lost the potential to unlock? I'm actually surprised that it says 3.1 because when Cydia asked if I wanted to upload my SHSH it was before I upgraded to 3.1. (at least I thought so)

Have successfully used this to update my 3GS to 3.1.2 and Jailbreak. I'm needing to take my phone in to an Apple Store. If I restore via iTunes to it's stock condition, will I be able to re-jailbreak it when I get home? More importantly, if they replace the phone, will I be able to jailbreak the new phone with the latest firmware right away using this version of PwnageTool? Thanks in advance for your time and insights! :)
