I know my mother is very stressed about this. She's 82 and does not have a bank account by choice (doesn't trust the banks). She gets her social security check, takes out cash, rides around on the bus, pays her rent, power bill, cable bill, and telephone bill. With a debit card, she would be charged to take out money (not to mention, you can't get out enough to pay all those bills). If she gets a bank account, she needs to pay a monthly fee. Yep - she is VERY upset over this.

I can see using e-readers - they're low power. But if they're going to allow tablets, then they might as well allow laptops, because really, a tablet IS a computer.

It annoys me only because I have to get up in the dark again, AND my kid needs to go to school in pitch black. Again. In the afternoon it doesn't matter, she has dance, and clubs and so on, so she's STILL coming home in the dark. Sure, I like having it light longer, but that happens regardless of time changes.

I have raised 4 teenagers (well, almost the youngest is 17). NO parent knows what their kids are doing all the time. The best parent in the world might still have a teen caught up in peer pressure, or experimenting. A terrible parent might have a kid who would never ever break the law. With this parent out of town, I disagree with the law. If the parent was THERE, fine. Oh, and I think the teen should get a much more "meaningful" punishment (all teens) for an MIP. Like helping in the morgue as community service.

Many states have toll roads, and toll bridges. Some are higher than ours (note bridges across San Francisco Bay). But one thing most have in common is they will toll ALL the bridges that stop and start in the same town. To do otherwise is asinine. I live in Bellevue, rarely go to Seattle, and live right next to I-90, so for me to get ONTO 405 is now a hassle! And it's increased our surface street traffic as well (but I'm sure that's a different department). Btw - I just drove in Texas, 3 toll roads, one was 50 cents, one was $1, and one was $1.75. In Chicago, the toll was $3.75 at night. No idea what it was during the day, or if it was the same all the time.

And gotta ask - what sort of punishment did your granddaughter get for doing this? None? I'd suggest some "slave labor" to pay for the lunches.

There was an illegitimate birth in our family - the "child" was in her 50's. Her appearance (through the help of a private detective) tore the family apart. "Mom" had married, had a child, and had never told anyone of this. It was a part of her past, that was locked away. This woman coming out of nowhere, 50 years later, did nothing good for anyone, including her, as her "mom" wanted nothing to do with her, and told her that.

They need to think this one out a bit.

So, I take it mom is still mentally ill? And baby is where? If the kid is in foster care, the money should go for the child's support.
