It is difficult to portray this as an advantage.

Ah, adding a relative and undefined phrase like "long term" to any statement adds a degree of plausibility and non-deniability. It's true that neither vaccination nor immunity acquired from an infection of covid-19 offer permanent immunity, but this is true of most infectious diseases.
What's also true, however, is that to beat endemic seasonal infections herd immunity need only apply to the vulnerable, as in our flu vaccination programme, and need only last until the end of the period that the virus is active.

If you do not believe that we are already in the midst of a culture war, then you have either been living under a rock for the last five years, or you are simply miffed that the right are adopting the tactics of the left.

I'm interested that you believe that they are both patriots, since in both Italy and France there is a widely held view that their allegiances lie not with their countries, but with the EU.
Or is that perhaps what you meant?

What a bizarre claim.
Is there a reason you put herd immunity in inverted commas? By doubting herd immunity, which is the implication, you become one with those who question vaccination, since vaccination is merely an attempt to cut short the process of achieving herd immunity.
Your second claim, that herd immunity might not be possible through community transmission requires substantiation. Can you cite any studies supporting this claim?
Had you chosen to argue that the rapidly evolving nature of the covid-19 virus means that each new evolution of the virus entails the risk that herd immunity might be by-passed that could have rung true, as precisely that happens regularly with other corona viruses such as influenza, although there is also a significant element of this that is due to scientists picking the wrong virus strain for our annual vaccination programme.

We didn't miss out on the economic catastrophe, indeed it can reasonably be posited that we intensified it...
On a separate note, it is quite amazing that, instead of the NHS being there to serve the interests of the country, it now appears that the country is there to serve the interests of the NHS. In the process of this reversal of the generally accepted order we have sacrificed many of the hard-won freedoms we previously enjoyed.
A government interested in a return to the status quo ante should ensure that the vestiges of this illiberalism are thoroughly revoked. If they are not, we will judge government appropriately.
