It's not a necessity, just something to aim for as a goal. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I've gotten 100,000+ word incomplete epics and 2,753 word one-shots. The fun is in the attempt, and having others around try to see how they go about writing for such an event too. I take multiple submissions for this, as well, so if you're feeling inspired to write three or four fics in the course of a month? I'll link all of them.
