Crasstalk : Predicting the Oscars: Best Supporting Actress

I'd send you my screeners except I haven't watched them yet. (Not that that stops me from making predictions.) Somehow I find the time to watch every Real Housewives and Top Chef episode within a week though.

OK, I love this post because I love speculating about this stuff. Jacki Weaver, no, for the reasons you said. Amy Adams and Melissa Leo, no, because they will split votes for The Fighter, esp once you factor in the non-actor votes because Amy Adams is more widely known and likely to be familiar to techie types, and the self-promotion stuff is going to hurt Leo among her own peeps. So that leaves high-brow British vs. Hollywood western. I think the girl will take it just based on True Grit (classic western! this is how Hollywood likes to see itself) and because I'm sure there are very few voters who haven't found HBC annoying at some point in the past--too many voters who either seethed or snoozed through several of her movies after having been dragged there by a girl- or boyfriend whose taste was just a little too highbrow for them. They might toy with the idea of giving it to her out of a sense of its being "her turn" but I'm just not feeling it. "She's got Harry Potter money" they'll think to themselves and just a teensy bit vindictively check another box.

The benefits of this are twofold: (1) your skin will be nice; (2) should you become trapped in some rubble* it will be pretty easy to extract you. *ptui ptui*

This can easily be solved by telling the teacher that you were having a really off day because you just broke up with someone and your dad's an alcoholic and you're homeless plus you had just found out you have cancer.

For real, theorchidthief, I have a mug with this guy's face on it. It's my only mug with a face on it--I don't even have mugs with my own kids' faces on them, so that should tell you something.

You must be confusing it with another one because SPOILER ALERT they didn't lose a single man from that voyage. That's why he's the balls. It was an amazing example of people pulling together and not losing their shit under the most extreme conditions. ETA and truly remarkable leadership.

It's a little off-topic in that it doesn't involve surfing but one of my favorite sea-going books is Endurance by Alfred Lansing. It's the true-life story of this Antarctic expedition that gets frozen in the ice, and they have to survive and do this seriously crazy trek across the ice, through the major frozen seas to an island, and then some of them camp on the island and a few others go off into this teeny-tiny boat and it's crazy and stormy and almost unimaginably severe conditions. I'm getting carried away but I absolutely love this book, it's thrilling, there's like this epic, life-or-death toboggan ride down a mountain in total nothingness, no seriously this is an amazing great book, it's got lots of waves--although they're winter sea waves I still bet he'd love it. Um, Endurance. Ernest Shackelton is the balls. That is all.

Crasstalk : The Weekly What-If

Women of this time often prefer to wear pants. Often these pants can be seen to conform to the shape of a woman's derriere. However they have a particular dislike of having the outlines of their undergarments visible to others. In fact, it is considered a social faux pas. Therefore a special type of undergarment was developed known as the thong. The thong girdles the pelvis with an expanse of fabric that passes between the legs, flush with the groin, and nestles within the cleavage of the buttocks. Thus the labia are shielded from the trousers without the visually unattractive edge of fabric bisecting the expanse of the posterior. Or, sorry, were you planning on maintaining that whole celibacy thing? If so, never mind then.
