KOMO - Seattle, WA : Snoqualmie residents on edge over \'problem bears\' | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Spor

I have to agree with jnsland. You choose to live next to a forest it is not like living in a city, you do things differently. You learn to live with nature. Bears scavenge, that is most of what they do in mother nature's plan. If you don't provide a food source, they will not come. The same lessons go for raccoons, squirrels and opossums.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Seattle handing out $1M in community-building grants | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Spo

The city of Seattle has money for 'its political cronies priorities' like new stadiums for millionaires, bike lanes, street cars and more. You say where is the money to fix streets, bridges and take care of basic infrastructure - that's needs a new levy or bond to pay for those. The taxpayers of Seattle are bilked and hoodwinked at every opportunity. What this city desperately needs (besides a political housecleaning) is an independently handled top-down performance audit of its spending and prioritization. That this audit be published publicly in its entirety the same day the politicians get it. That way we will not end up with a sanitized report burying the bodies out of the public eye.

The kid escaped a group home in 2008 and began a crime spree, now that he's had some time in solitary, Moore isn't so cocky now that he has come face to face with reality. I do not trivialize the theft of aircraft, too easily this could've led to a calamitous fireball with another aircraft, home or business. The young man is savvy, not simply a confused kid. His string of burglaries and thefts, the measures he went to in eluding law enforcement being apprehended with a stolen firearm paints an opposite picture to what his lawyer is trying to portray. Don't get me wrong, it never makes me happy seeing young people throwing their lives away. There are too many things here to make me think he isn't trying to play us for patsies. Life is about choice - be prepared to stand up and be accountable when you make the wrong ones -- repeatedly.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Tests show CFLs getting better | Consumer News | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KOMO

I agree it is a vexing issue. Many CFL's have in their fine print - not for inverted use. You have to read carefully - it is not like it used to be a 'slam dunk one size fits all'. What I ended up doing was purchasing a 'Y' splitter placing two smaller CFL's at a 45-degree angle than one larger element inverted and solved my problem.

The battery decrepitude issues after a few years of ownership with hybrids and all-electric cars makes them impractical to buy, either lease them or pass on them entirely for a new diesel. Right now, I commute in a 1989 CRX HF and get over 40mpg highway, dropping to 32 for more mixed driving conditions. I'm not seeing a lot of progress in mileage over 20 years with newer cars.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : 3 men rescued after falling into abandoned mine near North Bend | Local & Regional | Seattle News, W

This was an old and derelict mine, the older they get the more dangerous and unstable they become. It is a good example of why abandoned mine accesses should be imploded. I'm not for a nanny state by any means - these are like old large opening wells, a few boards nailed up is not sufficient, close them off for safety.

Why isn't there someone is WSDOT being held responsible for this gross act of incompetence? They are supposed to be capable of awarding contracts to reliable professional firms. Oh wait, I forgot myself - this is of course Washington, where blundering incompetents are promoted not punished (see Christine Gregoire for background). At least they finally got the Nalley Valley viaduct reopened. How can you misalign two sections of road by that much... We never did hear anything about the people behind that debacle and it's price tag either. It's just the taxpayers money after all. And, for our next trick, here comes the Seattle waterfront tunnel.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Car thefts in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue up 20 percent in 2010 | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Break

If you treat car theft as a minor criminal offense and do little more than give the culprits a slap on the wrist until they have amassed a considerable track record of theft, nothing will change, the crime will continue. We need to punish juvenile offenders as adults if their record shows a pattern of crime and repeat adult offenders sentenced to the high-end of the scale plus compulsory repayment of damages. The days of treating car theft as joy-riding are over. Cars are a necessary part of life, without them, you cannot manage really. If you think car theft is minor, go buy a replacement key for you new car and wince at the price tag.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Sales of e-books jump in January past hardcovers | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaking News | KO

E-books are a nice convenient media that has a place for people on the go, that much is true, but it is aimed at people who read something once and never again. For the rest of us who enjoy going back and re-reading our favorites what happens when the device is obsolete, simply dies, the company merges or the publisher changes the license and you lose access to that media? The audio/video world has seen these occurrences and most are done to reap more profits reselling you the same article one more time. I'm more retro than many and still prefer a real book, especially hardcovers. It is a media that always works, never need batteries and I've never had a book disappear from my library that a call to a friend or two couldn't solve. In twenty years, I'll still be able to read that same book or lend it to how many other people in that time without paying for it two or more times. I just wish I could say that about many of the movies I enjoy.

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Man, angry over hiked parking rate, hangs sign cursing mayor | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Breaki

Just remember that Mayor McShwinn's biking klatch doesn't pay to park. This is another example of the anti-car initiatives by this mayor. But our city father's will still find new ways to finance shoring up downtown Seattle, just like trying to divert the Safeco Field tax revenues once that is paid off to pay for renovating and expanding the downtown convention center. Seattle is becoming the 'field of nightmares' - when nobody comes, we'll tax you in order to have it our way, anyways.

If you ever have more than a minor problem with PSE service or their bill, PSE is a nightmare to contend with. Had a billing problem with them two-years ago where the previous owners left a MASSIVE power and gas bill behind. It took nearly a year of daily calls in order to get PSE to FINALLY realize I was an entirely new and different customer and remove the charges from my account. The way they treated me I do not think I was the first person this has ever happened to.

Just wait until the first person using this system gets into an accident and suddenly finds their insurance will not cover them. Most of us obtain insurance for private vehicles that allow unpaid carpooling. Once you take money, gas cards, whatever else in exchange like this system does, you become a commercial livery. Which is an exclusion of coverage clearly stated in the majority of policies written. Nice of WA-DOT to neglect mentioning that little fly in the ointment

Hey the military industrial complex is always looking for new opportunities to exploit, so why not warm up this old dog and pony show once more time and waste another mountain of money on another limited engagement -- no-win military police action. The Chinese as I see it, are about to show us just how much they have learned. They see this as a great way to make the US borrow more money backing up political alliances. China will enjoy reaping the dividends of their industrial espionage over the past decades being able to send developmental hardware off to test it in real combat against the US like their J-20 fighter and other missile systems just to name a few. Lots of money, territory and prestige are to be gained by pushing the US out of this theater without many downsides. Then the global industrial merchants will show us whose side they are on because who else can we turn to for everything in our stores anymore. It's certainly not produced in the US.
