Big Hollywood : 'Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance 3D' Review: A Campy, Self-Aware Action Flick

I must disagree. I think if you play up the Vengeance angle, you can turn this into a gritty, dark, revenge flick ala the Crow.

Big Hollywood : Is Jon Stewart Spreading Misinformation About Teachers' Pay Cuts and Fox News?

"His mother was a teacher, is still in the educational field, which means he knows very well how hard teachers work, the long hours they put in." But because she's in a union, she will get the same pay as another teacher who does the bare minimum to keep their job. I'm sorry, but the "teachers work so haaarrd!" knee-jerk excuse is stale and over-used. The U.S. ranks just about dead last in education among industrialized nations yet we spend the most per student. Budget shortfalls notwithstanding just the fact that our children are getting an inferior education for a lot of money is reason enough to make changes. If I do consistently sub-standard work at my job I will at minimum not get a raise, probably eventually fired. Not so with a crappy teacher. And you think that's fair? To the tax-payers, the children or the good teachers?

Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread

So yesterday I watched the documentary on the evolution of American horror films Nightmares In Red, White, and Blue. I was blown away by how uber left-wing the whole thing was, and how so many of these otherwise brilliant film-makers can be so... stupid? Not to mention the irony of saying Invasion of the Body Snatchers is "liberal" because its about loss of individuality to the collective. The section on the 80s was a huge Reagan hatefest. And the comments about 9/11...damn.

Big Hollywood : Why Hollywood Can't Find Americans to Portray American Superheroes (Not That There's Anything Wrong

Here are my problems with Superman Returns: Superman finds what he thinks are the remains to Krypton and abruptly leaves Earth without explaining himself to Lois, who is rightfully pissed off. Umm... why the hurry, Clark? I mean, seriously, you couldn't spare a phone call "Hey Lois, I'm'a be gone for five years, but I will be back." Hell, he left the whole damn planet hanging without so much as a by-your-leave. When he shows back up crooks try to shoot him. Were they living under a rock for their whole lives that they didn't know Big Blue was freakin bulletproof? Really? Lex Luthor waltzes into the Fortress of Solitude and steals Kryptonian Tech. Just like that. No advanced programs that can tell the difference between a Kryptonian and a scenery-chewing nutjob? Not even a padlock? Reeaallly? Lex Luthor's big scheme involves #1 Kryptonite (soooo lazy) and #2....wait for it....a real estate scheme? AGAIN? SERIOUSLY?! Superman is Lois Lane's baby-daddy. It boggles the mind. I can't even get around the mechanics of that, but on top of that she not only doesn't tell Superman he has a kid (her feewings were hurt boo hoo) but (if I remember correctly) she convinces a Cyclops that he's the daddy. How does that not reduce Lois Lane to a Jerry Springer guest?

I'd like to point out that the US was not militarily defeated by the NVA. Immediately after the Tet offensive, Giap was despondent over the near-destruction of the VC and the total failure of the North to gain any ground. however, after Walter Cronkite's famous "we cannot win" newscast, however, Giap knew that the US lost the political will to win. The US, under Nixon, forced the North to sign the Paris Peace Accords with heavy bombing campaigns, but Watergate led the Democratic Congress to refuse to authorize funding to resume bombing when the North violated the Accords and invaded the South.

How about Humphrey Bogart in "Sahara?" A U.S. tank gathers a rag-tag crew of Brits and one African soldier after the disastrous battle of Tobruk (unless I'm mistaken) trying to find water and hold off a German advance. Notable to me for the heroic, noble portrayal of the black African soldier and how the Allies never even blink at his skin color.

Big Hollywood : Top 5: Once Great Directors Who Lost Their Mojo

The zombie series is in fact an adaptation of the comic book series "The Walking Dead", which is a masterpiece of survival fiction, focusing on character over zombie-gore. Not to be cliche, but the series really is about the human condition, and I can't wait to see if the TV show gets it right. "The Walking Dead" is the movie George Romero would have made if he didn't turn into a political hack.

That's why I never bothered to watch "Land" -- because of the plot. In a post-apocalyptic city with the walking dead on all sides, y'know who will be considered "rich?" Those with the guns, ammo, and skills to use them. Those who can grow food. Those who can build and maintain equipment. People with lots of bits of paper with dead presidents on them or with imaginary bits of paper in a bank -- worthless.

HBO should make the Walking Dead a series (provided they STICK to the source material AND film it in black and white.) Definitely the best zombie story, either in print or on film.
