He was a nice guy. He was a happy kid. I watched Steve run in high school in 1969. I followed his Ducks career as he beat everyone he ran against. I was at the 1972 Olympic Trials where he qualified for the Olympics. His run in the 1972 Olympics is still one of the gutsiest runs I've ever seen. He was an amazing runner. Then he was killed in a car crash. He had been drinking and should not have been driving. No excuses. It ended his life and affected many people.
