Saxon is independent learning after 4th as long as you're still checking and not trusting the student to come to you if she needs help....*cough*. I still have no idea how I passed the test to get into the community college. I can't use Saxon now with mine because I still shudder anytime I see those books. :) It was me, though, not them...probably. I love Math-U-See, but it is a spendy program to get into.

Couch to 5k!! Good for you!! I'm starting *again* myself. Blah. But it really does increase your capacity and energy after a few weeks, which is why I keep coming back to it. Well, no, I keep coming back to it because it's the only way I've reliably lost weight, and I always seem to have weight to lose. :)

So PNEU was the "box curriculum" of their day. That's funny. :) Maybe I should temper my scorn of the open-and-go, box-in-the-mail program, eh? :)

I think the "It's ok" message is exactly the one so many of us homeschool moms need to hear.

I felt a lot better about my own level of tailoring (I don't use any program) when I was reading about my personality type: that my type is the one best suited to (and loves most) putting together a system based on big ideas. For me, that was like hearing "It's ok to plan your own thing." And, conversely, "Don't expect other people to have the same need to plan their own thing."

I think that's the best theme verse ever. You could make it your life verse and then use it as an excuse to move up to Washington wine country - where the cheap wine tastes like premium and the cost of living is so much less. :D You know I have to try every once in awhile. :)

My copy of this book arrived in the mail last week, and now this post has helped bump it up on the priority list. I have been trying for a good history of philosophical thought book, and my last audio book in that vein was disappointing.

I'll be thinking along similar lines as I start to plan next year for sure. This was a great rabbit trail to take!

So often it seems our vices can even be tied up in what we consider our virtues, which makes it even harder.

I love that poetry book. My parents had it when I was growing up, too. :)

I love the distinction you made here, Brandy, between patriotism and jingoism.

Yes! "Being cynical is easier" - I think that's the temptation of this chapter.
