SAM is perfectly fine, but I've still had occasional issues with push and sam. just good to know there is always a backup plan.

there is not a iOS 4.9, and a 4S cannot have anything below iOS 5. If you mean i4, then you must have SHSH and APticket for 5.0.1. If you do not have them already, there is no way to get them.

In order to now reinstall to 5.0.1, you must have SHSH and APTicket available for that phone for that firmware. Does this custom firmware have these stitched? if not, it will not work.

there is an unlock interposer, similar to gevey, called cobra X or something similar, that does not require the iPad baseband nor any further software modifications. Beijingiphonerepair sells it. Check out there online store.

you probably need to restore (to custom FW only) hold power+home for ten seconds. then only home for 15. use redsn0w to DFU, and iTunes should recognize it to restore.

if you go to settings>general>reset and reset all settings (not erase data), it will act as if you are setting u a new phone when it reboots. When it goes through this process, select restore from iTunes backup. might work, did for me!

same thing happened to my 3GS new BR. I untethered with redsn0w- it would not boot properly, so I 'tethered boot' with redsn0w and since, everything works fine.

best thing is to use a CUSTOM firmware and get to iOS 4.2.1 then you will have to rejailbreak and unlock, as long as you don't update your baseband (hence use only custom firmware)

try restoring completely fresh to stock 5.0.1 then rerun redsn0w over clean firmware (without backups or anything)

reopen redsn0w and just "enter DFU", if this works properly, reopen again and click "jailbreak" and follow through EXCEPT DONT press the buttons when it tells you to; you will already be in DFU mode.

5.1 has not been release. Unless you mean 5.0.1, which has some security fixes and supposed battery drain fix. The upcoming jailbreak will untether 5.0.1, so it is a safe firmware. However, I would advise using iFaith to save complete shsh and APticket for 5.0 so you can restore at a later time if necessary. But upgrading to 5.0.1 will not hurt your chance for jailbreak.

resetting settings in a JB device will mess it up. Open tiny umbrella make sure it has your SHSH start TSS server. put the phone in DFU mode using redsn0w or pwnagetool in iTunes shift-restore (or option-restore on mac) using preferably a custom ipsw of the OS that was last on the device
