There are some strong priests and bishops in the USA but they're outside of the "mainstream". After 39 years and over 45 million abortions, the Bishops have not been able to issue a clear, coherrant and united directive to Catholic voters. Every statement issued is a vague recommendation to weigh the various issues and vote your consciense. The issues listed usually including abortion, the death penalty, the war in Iraq, immigration and taking care of the poor. What the Bishops have not done is to prioritize the issues. Nancy Pelosi could actually read the 2008 voting directive and decide that opposing the Iraq war, supporting illegal immigration and caring for the poor outweighs what the church believes is the murder of over 45 million human beings.
