West Ham Till I Die : In Conversation With David Sullivan (Part 6): "We Were the Most Insolvent Club in the Country"

Couldn't agree more about G&S Tom. Although I don't like Allardyce either, but we desperately needed some discipline and I think he's brought that (and probably kept DS quiet). Yeah moving on is always more healthy than dragging up the past, but when G&S took over they were talking about suing the lawyers for bad advice to try and reclaim some Tevez money. So to invite the man who was pretty much responsible in the first place into bed with them for a relatively small sum tastes strange to me. The problem is this has never really been a site for healthy cynicism. You are either for or against and one of the reasons I stopped posting was I wasn't in the mood for constantly swimming against the tide. A couple of years ago you might remember an interview ID did with Duxberry. The reaction from most commenters was similar. Wow he is being open with us what a great guy. I was cynical that day and most thought I was whingeing but I'm still far from convinced that DS is baring his soul to us.

Yeah or West Ham United (2012). Got a certain ring to it. Lol. Nearly did that myself recently. I don't know how that works with football clubs Tom, but the way Pompey are going I think we might find out. The point I was making mate was about Brown. I really don't get it.

Hello academyhammer. The Sheff U debts didn't prevent us from going into admin. They just meant that, if we had, we wouldn't have been able to cut a deal with Sheff U to accept a portion of the debt and write the rest off. Apparently.

Yeah I've just seen your post Graham. From what DS said it's because of the debt to Sheff U mainly that we couldn't have been saved by admin in the same way as Rangers or Pompey. I've never heard that before. No idea if it's true but I guess it must be or someone in the media will pick it up. Under the circumstances is £500k worth his involvement?

"...Terry Brown owns a tiny little bit. He put half a million pounds in. I know the fans hate Terry, but you couldn’t have a guy that loves the club more than Terry. He may have run the club like an accountant, but he goes to every home and away game and he loves the club. When we asked for half a million quid he put it in. You could say well it’s nothing, but it isn’t nothing, it’s a substantial sum of money." "We have to pay down Sheffield United. The whole Tevez deal cost the club over £30 million" And who was responsible for that deal? And how much did he sell the club for? £80-£85m. He must have cleared a nice little sum personally from that. I would argue he should be answering some serious questions about that deal and answering them to club lawyers with a view to holding him responsible for that debt. Why is that not the case? That's the kind of question I would like DS to answer in this new culture of openness and honesty. NB. Iain could you tell me why my comments are being deleted? I might have a different view, and often use humour and sarcasm to make that point, but I haven't broken any rules or been disrespectful to anyone (except maybe G&S and KB, and never in an offensive manner).

Ok I see what you mean. I can't see arranging to meet in Starbucks for a latte before the match either! Not been to stratford for years. Are the old pubs still there or have they made way (I remember the swan? in the broadway, the wetherspoons one (Golden Hind?) round by that pointy glass building (ok not exactly traditional!). I'm sure the Golden Egg cafe is long gone...lol. I think I'm gonna go back for a reccy just in case the move does happen.

West Ham Till I Die : As I Wasn't Saying Yesterday... Olympic Lease Could Be Good News

Thanks for your reply insidewhammer, I think you're about spot on with those figures. The point I was making was that construction costs for the taxpayer would apparently be around £100m. If this could be financed over 25 years or so at £5m a year (incl interest) it could be offset by sponsorship monies, so the media stories about extra cost to the taxpayer don't really stack up.

Good points Gav, although I don't get the last one. surely the local facilities for fans would be better, including food and drink. Or am I missing the point? Another point would be the increase in fair weather/casual/less committed support. Another thing that crossed my mind, assuming we are in the Prem, is when we play teams with bigger support than us, is there a danger of a Wigan situation where the home support would be matched or outnumbered by the away? I still think if we want to progress as a club we need the financial benefits of the move. Hopefully we will find a way around the problem of atmosphere/view etc. I'm convinced there will be some kind temporary seating solution found.

Iain, as you well know, anything printed in the Daily Mail should be taken with a pinch of salt big enough to grit the M11 from now until February. However, as far as us taking over the tenancy of the OS is concerned, I think the game has changed recently. With Spurs now stating publicly that they have absolutely no interest in the stadium, the choice is either us, Orient or a hugely expensive white elephant. I don't think Orient would either want or be capable of taking over the tenancy. I really can't see how that could happen. Hearn is just holding out for a nice cash bonus. In which case we are surely now in a position to take the stadium on our terms or walk away. Which is giving the OPLC little choice but to accept. OK asking for the track to be removed would open up a can of worms that would delay any decision for years. But I'm sure we could work with the OPLC to ensure there are seats over the track during the season and all athletics events take place in the summer (bar something like the World Athletics Championships as a one-off). Really, what would they do with the stadium if we pulled out?

I understand a deal had been pretty much done with Westfield for naming rights to the stadium. With the bulk of the money going to WHU. And it was for very big numbers. From what Gold was reported as saying yesterday any lease would be very long term. I assume that enables Westfield or whoever to carry on with their proposed sponsorship but with that money now going to the OPLC? Surely this would cover any additional costs being incurred by the taxpayer. And whilst we are on the subject of UK taxpayers, I think it's worth noting that Joe Lewis, the British billionaire owner of Spurs, has decided not to contribute to the UK tax system at all and is located in the tax haven that is the Cayman Islands. They really should be told the offer of £17m of public funding for infrastructure around WHL is no longer on the table.

Hello Robert. I have to say I usually come to WHTID for the comments. If you're gonna be contributing on a regular basis that might change. Really enjoyed reading that. Lighthearted but thoughtful and full of wit and personality. Reading this and watching the specials on sky arts has just put a huge smile on my face.
West Ham Till I Die : Grant & Ben Haim to Miss Stoke?

Luckily for spurs, they have a game on 30th October. I understand Redknapp would have been in a similar situation had the game fallen the following day. To be fair to Grant, although I'm not religious and I don't follow Judaism, I think the comparisons with Christmas are wide of the mark. The day is spent praying, fasting and asking God for forgiveness, rather than eating, arguing and watching only fools and horses. I guess if members of my family had been exterminated for their religious beliefs as Grant's were, I might feel that it was not something I would compromise. Even if it put my career at risk. And Grant having a word with the big man might benefit the team a lot more than a half time talk on Saturday.

West Ham Till I Die : Crass

I've made my feelings about G&S and Brady clear in the past so I won't add to that here. But as of yesterday I understand there were still 2,000 tickets available for tomorrows game. The first home derby of the season. Against Chelsea. In which case it looks like we will struggle to sell out any game this year. I assume the tickets in question would be at the very top of the price range but even so, if they don't fill the seats with someone elses arse then they aren't saving any money. And the cost in bad feeling is again high (as with welcoming Brown back). Surely a better policy would be to have drawn a line under existing privilege ticket holders and say no more would added in the current climate. (By the way, I notice they have made parking available to purchase in the school on matchdays. Anyone informed as to how much they are charging for this?)

West Ham Till I Die : Rolling Transfer Rumour Mill

Ruud Boffin? Sounds more like a pervy professor than a back up keeper! With the level of players that came in and the number of deals that fell through, I don't see the point of releasing the loanees and kids that we did. Oh well, it's done now. The most important thing is that we didn't sell Parker, Cole, etc at last minute with no replacements. If Grant can get the squad to gel and play as a team I think we'll do better than a lot of people seem to think. Here's hoping...
