I think it absolutely does! Of course, the novel is absolutely investigating consumerism, but so much of the novel is examining the character's reliance on technology. When the kids find themselves without their feeds, they are befuddled and treated medically, as if withdrawing from the technology to which they have become so accustomed. Furthermore, it can be argued that the characters have developed such a reliance on their technology that they have forgotten how to comfortably do human things like talking face-to-face, falling in love, raising their children, etc. (I don't want to give too much away!) I in no way seek to blame the technology, but rather open the door to investigating our relationship with technology now and in the future. I do agree with your assertion that my choice of words reduced the question to offense of defense. I have told my students to be on the lookout for misleading questions and one-sided or flawed arguments. And yes, it relates to how our is attention changing because of technology. However, by wording the question as I did, I really wanted students to think about their very personal relationship with their electronics and how that connection may develop over time as technology and humans evolve. In class, we had some very honest discussion about our tech habits. But the question I asked remains, is this current generation technology-obsessed? Why are we so attached? Is it, as Ms. Amling said, a novelty? This was brought up in class today as well by Racheal. It's possible that our grand devotion to technology could die off in a few years instead of expand.
