I am so naive; I was thinking this morning that the schools should require Dr. excuses or not pay out the sick day. Never did I consider that a Dr. would risk their license to make a political statement. A few years ago Houston had a "Day Without an Immigrant" protest. Only 6 of our 20 employees worked that day. In appreciation of the 6 responsible employees that worked as scheduled, I gave each a $500.00 Bonus with that weeks paycheck. I didn't need to say anything to the 14; the surprised whops and hollars of the 6 rewarded employees were enough to make my point. In the 3-4 years since, the downturn in the economy has forced us to downsize. The 14 are no longer employeed with us and frankly I don't miss them.

Bravo! I noted that they were deporting illegals that had already been arrested for some other crime. Enforce our existing immigration laws, secure our borders and require e-verify and you will solve the problem of existing illegals by attrition. The claim that "we can't just deport them all" is a false argument. I'm happy for those tax payers. However, I'm guessing that the reason for a drop in arrests & repeat offenders is that the word got out on the street and the illegals are now committing crime in a more "tolerant" location.

In answer to your challenge, I suggest ..... 1) REALLY secure the border! Do the southern border 1st but don't forget the northern border. 2) REQUIRE employer verification of authorization to work. The current verification system is voluntary and participation puts a small business owner at a competitive disadvantage . 3) Replace government sponsored entitlements and return to family, faith or community based charity. 4) During the course of enforcing traffic, criminal and civil law …. when an illegal immigrant is found to be breaking the law, deport them.

I do not accept any of the premises. First, you incorrectly assume that illegal immigrants don't pay taxes. Most pay the same taxes that citizens with similar skills and subsequent wages pays. Like their unskilled citizen peers, their wage base is most often low enough to qualify them for earned income credit when they file their income taxes and are subsequently returned more than they paid. New illegal immigrants may use bogus social security numbers, claim a large number of dependents and may not file a return for a few years to avoid detection. However, it doesn't take long for them to learn how to work the system ... request a tax ID# from the social security administration, use it in lieu of a social security number, file a return and get more money back than they gave in first place. Second, you incorrectly assume that most opponents of amnesty expect the government to "round up" all the illegal immigrants and deport them. Not so. In addition to securing the border, I believe that we simply ask that our government deport any illegal immigrant they catch in the course of enforcing traffic and/or criminal law.
