I already mentioned this on the Link Round-up, but I guess *this* is the place to note that a bunch of us Toasties won 1st place at "30 Rock" trivia last night. By a significant margin, I might add.

I went to a conference a few years ago about silent film and WWI, where one of the events was a screening of the silent documentary, "The Battle of the Somme", as it would have been shown in 1916 (in a period venue, with recruiters in military uniforms harassing young men about why they hadn't joined up, etc.)

My partner was playing piano accompaniment for the film, and there was a violinist as well.

It was an extremely harrowing film, as you might imagine, but a very memorable experience. The scale of loss during just that one battle is hard to wrap your mind around (including 50,000 casualties just on the first day).
