Thank you for acknowledging that Howard Zinn and I are two different people. Not many here can. I'll make my own reasons to be treated like a pinata, thank you very much! ... I largely agree with these points, dA Copper. But I suspect that this problem might lie in the article, and not Zinn's lesson plan. I have not looked over the lesson plan in great detail, but certain claims by the author of this article (teaching about lynching to 3-yr olds, or some such thing). Well, I can't call that a lie, but I'd be astonished if it were true.

So, if I'm understanding you correctly ... One of the things that made this country great was a sense of greatness? I know, I know ... I'm an elitist for actually reading the sentences that you write. Sorry for the condescension. (But that's what you're saying, right?)

Thank you for putting a margin of effort into delineating your thoughts. You seem to be a student of my work, so it seems to me you might have saved yourself some time if you had noticed that I haven't advocated implementing Zinn's program into public schools. I've defended his program from complete bastardization a couple of times, but then even only when begged to (by my standards of begging. I know begging when I read it between the lines). I've read Zinn, and I think he should be read - that is, chosen to be read. But you're spot on about the problem of canonizing him, with his admitted subjectivity. The way I see it, Zinn is to public academia as Kucinich or Paul is to president. They aren't getting the job, but they'll stir the pot like no one else is able, or willing to do, in the process of trying. Why does the pot need stirring? Well, even though I do care about the children, when it comes to this particular venue, my aim is a little different. This place is called "Andrew Breitbarts Presents: Big Hollywood," for Pete's sake. Who am I going to intellectually sway, honestly? This is not a forum for ideas; this is a social forum. And based on your level of articulation and sound reasoning, my advice to you is: run. The pot needs stirring in this case not because of the children but because of the grown-ups, for their insistence that "we set the standard for equal rights for other nations to follow." You know, historical inaccuracies like that. Not so different from not knowing the 3/5 Compromise, in terms of sheer wrongness. Your comments touched on the personal, so I'll go there, but just for a minute. Surely, you don't think "frothy" meant "committed" or "long-winded" or "obsessed," did you? Because of course I meant it as "wont to bandy about the sort of flagrant, crazy, hyperbolic insults that Morris began and ended with." As far as 'getting the last word' on a message board, I believe the internet expression is "meh." Cheers, Axslinger. Ya friggin' Wingnut.

Yummy, anecdotal evidence, my favorite. I have 5 in my family. I win. But seriously ... you aren't "following" me closely enough. Scroll down from here (where I address Morris). Your words, here, are free from cogent detail and do not inspire me to add more to what I say in that post. ... Except for this. Self-scrutiny is what makes this country great. Always has been.

I'm politely curious, T-Rav: Three sisters with the same educational experience ended up with three vastly different worldviews. Why is it easier for you to believe that you 'escaped' some indoctrination, rather than believing that indoctrination is a myth? (... Not to take anything away from your mother. Hats off to her.)

I hear you. That's two paragraphs of facts you've pasted there. It sure would be messed up if Zinn wanted teachers to teach the Revolution with just those two paragraphs, and move on. Yep, that'd be nutty.

Well listen, Morris. I'm not going to get as frothy as you are about this. I'm a realist. I'm a liberal at a Breitbart site. That necessarily puts me in troll territory, if I let it. And believe me, there are a lot of clever conservative-bashing turns of phrase that are just as hyperbolic and creepy as your "Liberals worship at the font of the God-State. And they pray to their current deity in man-child form, Obama" bit. Instead, out of respect, I'll stay rooted in reality and make a couple of points. Isn't "Columbus discovered America" a half-truth, as well? An argument can be made that blindly patriotic half-truths are as dangerous as you think Zinn's are, don't you think? As far as the historical facts you lay out in your post, I suspect you'd like to believe that I'd want to suppress those. Hell no. I don't speak for Zinn or liberals or anyone but myself, but it seems to me that we're all best off educating our kids about the darkness (and the good) in Humanity, not just in Americans. The best summary of an example being: Americans have treated Africans like crap. And, just as importantly, Africans have treated Africans like crap. (And the same goes for historic elements of generosity and goodness.) Let's stop rosy-ing up the place and start illustrating what Man is capable of. What to strive for, what to fight against. Challenge students to acknowledge that they can make things better. There's nothing relativistic about it.

Are you an educator? Not to get personal, it's just that I don't know what a Teaching Methods site placement is. Sorry ... Obviously, I can't speak with authority on your personal experiences, but it seems to me that your belief that America's imperfections are being disproportionately represented in school says more about you than it says about the system. Not an insult - I don't mean you, singularly. I mean every educator, parent, or citizen who feels like they've got a stake in this debate. As for the examples you provide, is it possible that you have disdain for the way your colleagues handle the material within the provided standards, rather than the standards themselves? I simply can't believe that any imaginative history teacher would feel as though his hands were tied, that he was being forced to make Jefferson's slaves his "central, if not only, personality trait." Or that innovations in technology and transportation couldn't rival massacres for face-time on the Western Expansion Power-Point. In any case, thanks for the thoughtful response.
