They knew enough for me to be comfortable. Prior to 9/11/01 or Katrina, I think most of the answers would have centered around "life guards" and "Baywatch".

CGBlog.org :: An Unofficial Coast Guard Blog : Guess what ought to be on the bookshelves of your local bookstore today

I am almost done with this book and I have to say Ryan, I am seriously impressed. Mr. Helvarg traveled the Coast Guard, collecting many stories, appropriately applying them to themes, and all of it is fairly detailed. I have plenty of Coast Guard books, but this one has me turning the pages. There is one, somewhat distracting point Helvarg makes, as he points out "climate change" mutiple times. Is it terrible? No, but I picked up on it. Helvarg is an environmentalist, so I can't completely fault him. He is critical in some parts of the book, with regards to Deepwater, the clean up in San Fran, Webster Smith, etc, which i think generally adds to the credibility of the book. We're not completely perfect. Helvarg doesn't try to to paint that picture. For those serving in the Coast Guard, many of the names in this book will be familiar to you. I find myself saying "Wait isn't that....." or "Hey, I worked with him...." This book has been a joy to read, does the Coast Guard a service and I believe is a "must read" even for people who know everything. If you like a good sea story, there are plenty in this book.

This "stuff" has been looked at well before the "outbreak" of swine flu (oh! I mean H1N1). If there is an outbreak of ebola any time soon, I cannot promise I will be in at work. I will be at home praying it doesn't go airborne. On a side note, read the book "Hotzone".

Multiple commissioning sources are great. One difference between the Army's commissioning sources and the Coast Guard's, no ROTC. So, even after looking at the article, that would be a glaring difference. I have no doubt that officers 2 or 3 years out MAY believe the diploma means nothing, however, how many times have they tried, they would still have 2-3 more years of service before putting that diploma to the test. The private sector eats up academy graduates, whether they be from USCGA, USMMA, USMA, USNA or USAFA....jobs are there for them. This is a typical Washington Post article. Instead of questioning OUT OF CONTROL spending by the federal government, universal healthcare, "tax credits" to people not paying taxes, and the rise of the welfare state. No, the Washington Post questions the need for service academies that have been around since the early days of this country. This, while SOME propose a "Civil Service Academy". The article is uninformed and laughable at best. Back to "Liberty and Tyranny" for me.

CGBlog.org :: An Unofficial Coast Guard Blog : The Coast Guards (short) New Medial Time Line

Ryan, I like this thread. I think it goes to show the government is willing to engage the public, especially a reasonable, patient public. While some blogs are on the fringe and make it their mission to trash aspects of the Coast Guard, I think CGBlog has come a long way and has become a website that every day Coasties can interact and discuss various topics. And look, even admirals are participating. How often do you see senior executives on other agency's blogs engaging the public in a constructive way? I think we've got it good folks.

Isn't this was our Homeland Security Sec. was talking about? I don't disagree. I do appreciate however having access to that for......contracts when I need proof of my state of residence. I also like it during tax season, although I decided not to do it this year after I figured out, if you work of the government, there's no need to pay taxes. Now I get to enjoy the fruits of my labor (ok, I did pay my taxes, and when I see how much....I get sick to my stomach).

Had the same question myself Brad. If they were forced to come back to the U.S. Coast Guard AFTER their time with the SEALs, then I could see a very REAL benefit for the Coast Guard. I could also see some very board SEALs. Without that....what do we, the Coast Guard, get out of them STAYING with the SEALs? I brought this up to a few SEALs I know working OCONUS....and they didn't have an answer either. Either way, I'm proud of them, and hope for their continued success.
