I didn't vote for you. "The common refrain that we hear is that Muslims are all the same" Common refrain? Really? Who said it? I haven't heard it. On the contrary, no matter how many Muslims kill while yelling "Allahu akbar!", we are constantly told that they are atypical, and they don't represent the "religion of peace". But fortunately, Danyaal Raza and Rahim Manji are on the case. On the case? Are they denouncing violent Muslims? No, silly! They are denouncing non-Muslims for noticing violent Muslims. Of course, arguments like Raza's and Manji's have a lot more resonance if you don’t actually know any critics of Muslims personally. People like Raza and Manji are essentially asking us to dehumanize any critic of Islam.

All worthy suggestions, but ... the real elephant in the room here is Islam. The crowds in the streets are mainly aggressive young men. There are chanting "Allahu akbar!" They are NOT the foundation of freedom, liberty, republican virtue or anything else we Westerners like. They ARE, however, a foundation for Sharia, violence, repression, vendettas, revenge and tyranny. Expect to see even more of that in the future. The only relevant yardstick for any action here is, will it weaken Islam and strengthen secular liberalism? Right now Islam is stronger by approximately ten to one. Those are the odds. This is the task. Good luck.

You guys all miss the point. Arianna Huffington is absolutely correct. The Left had a two year window between elections to end Constitutional government and anoint themselves the permanent rulers, but they didn't quite make it. Still, they didn't miss by much. In the last 22 months, they • installed two corrupt Constitution-haters on the Supreme Court, • vastly diminished the productive class, • burdened us all with vast new regulations, taxes and debt, • wasted our military in increasingly pointless dissipation, • insulted our allies, appeased our enemies, • added millions of illegal immigrants, • dishonored and disgraced everything they touched and then lied about it afterwards. And note that Obama is still president, Reid is still Senate Majority Leader, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank and other corrupt America-haters are still in Congress, 5/9 of the Supreme Court doesn't think the Constitution is Constitutional, and a multi-million-strong overwhelmingly leftist overpaid bureaucracy still controls every aspect of our daily lives. The real reason why the Left loves Islam: Leftists only appear to hate religion because of their hatred of Christianity. Indeed, hatred of Christianity is the Left's raison d'être. (The Left would also hate Judaism if they could, but the theology is too complex for them, so they just hate Jews instead.) But other than Christianity, the Left does not really hate religion at all. It can't. Leftism is itself a religion: mutually contradictory dogmas that can only be accepted on faith, not reason. Besides itself, the the Left likes other religions that 1) are not very common near where Leftists live, 2) are practiced mostly by brown-skinned people, and 3) can draw off Christians and Jews. Therefore Leftists like Shamanism, Hinduism and Buddhism, which they consider exotic, picturesque practices that pose competition to Christianity. The religion that makes Leftists wet themselves with veneration, however, is Islam. Not only does Islam have traits 1) [so far, anyway], 2) and 3) above, but it also has 4) they make demands and will kill to obtain them. Leftists would like to do that too, and they talk about it all the time, but they rarely carry it out because they are lousy fighters and anyway they are cowards. Most Islamists are lousy fighters too, but they are not always cowards and are occasionally willing to kill and die. Leftists worship this kind of determination in hopes of possessing it themselves someday.

Plus, in spite of having no military power worth mentioning, it is a "counterweight" to the US. What's not for a Leftist to like? The United Nations: an unaccountable, corrupt transnational bureaucracy that feigns altruism while lining its members' pockets and opposing the US and Israel. The United Nations is like Disneyland for Leftists: "The Happiest Place on Earth" (TM). Offense: For the most part, Leftists no longer have policy positions, they just take "offense" at everything that displeases them. Offense is better than that having an actual position because being offended requires no thought or explanation other than screaming that they were offended. Since "offense" was not reasoned into, no one can reason them out of it, and it needs no reasoned defense, it simply is. Offense is the perfect apotheosis of Leftism. Human Rights: "Human Rights" are not rights in the traditional sense of things that the government can't do to you. They are almost the opposite: things the government must do to you, such as give you a job, give you a doctor or just plain give you other people's money. Plus, prefixing the word "human" before the word "rights" avoids sticky questions about the source of rights that might implicate religion or God. Journalists: Journalists are Leftists' cheerleaders. Whatever Leftists do, they can count on journalists to try to make it look good and virtuous. And when Leftists screw up in really obvious ways, journalists will put on a show to try to distract everyone. Also, Leftists and journalists carry on a constant orgy of incestuous hook-ups and cross-dressing (Leftists act as journalists, and journalists act as Leftists). Leftists like this so much, they insist on counting journalists among the martyr-classes of society, like social workers and community organizers, as though these people are above such petty concerns as getting a paycheck. Strangely, the public at large continues to hold journalists in the same esteem as crack whores. Victims: Being a victim is the highest state a Leftist can aspire to. It is the Leftist equivalent of a holy martyr. Unlike actual religious martyrs, though, Leftists want to be compensated with money and power for being victims. Indeed they want to be compensated with money and power for other people being victims. This is Leftist "two-fer" because they get the money and power without themselves suffering the inconvenience of actually being a victim. This is why Leftists spend so much time and energy trying to recruit to their cause other people who have more plausible victimhood claims than native Leftists do. Hate Crimes: Leftist love "hate crimes" because it allows them to do their favorite pastime: grasp power by dividing the citizenry. Of course, all crimes by definition have mens rea and so really involve a kind of hate, but when Leftist use the term, they mean only situations where Leftists can pose as defenders of the vulnerable. Indeed, it is not even necessary for it to be an actual crime. It need only allow Leftists to practice their favorite hobby of taking "offense", see above. @Suzanne Agree. I think the real question is why any legislators or judges care what the so-called "feminists" demand. After all, it's not like they represent a big voting bloc. Few women want to vote with the Bitter Spinster Brigade and all but a few whipped men studiously ignore them. So how did a tiny minority come to dictate vast swathes of radical new law? If we could answer that, it would be a big stride toward restoring marriage, sanity and the Constitution.

I admit that after reading this I was all ready to hate on Ms. Petro. But after reading what the Ms. Petro wrote, I changed my mind. Yes, she is in many ways decadent and foolish, and she writes much that I disagree with, but that is also true of most folks and especially true of public school teachers in the South Bronx. Yes, I wouldn't necessarily want my kids in her class, but then that's part of why I wouldn't put my kids in the South Bronx public schools at all. I think the real problem people have with Ms. Petro is that she doesn't hide the fact that she is decadent and foolish. Most of the public school hierarchy is no less decadent and foolish, but they prefer to keep it less obvious. Ms. Petro does not. There is something to be said for hypocrisy: if you are decadent and foolish, it may indeed be better to hide the fact, especially from children. But if that is the argument against Ms. Petro, then let us make it plainly: she is insufficiently hypocritical and so she should be removed. In her favor, she can write syntactically meaningful sentences and compositionally meaningful paragraphs. Her ability as a writer is probably beyond at least most of her teaching colleagues. And if in her class she can hold the attention of notoriously unruly adolescent males, well, all the better. So is her probable ability to impart proper writing technique to teenagers worth sacrificing because of her lack of hypocrisy? I think not. Or at least, let us wait until she actually does something to harm her students before condemning her.
