If you like it, it's art; if you don't, it's still art. But I think we've had this discussion before ...

I found AP to be the truest form of public opinion about what Truth and Art really are, not some elitist's definition of what should be 'Art' and what is just merely 'art'.

"Watching them, they had no preconceived notions of what is, was, or should be" even though there were 'Artists' trying to tell them, LOL. Between the internet and public libraries arts education should not have to rely on schools to teach anything about it. If a person is interested in anything, let alone the arts, there is nothing in this country that should prevent them from learning about it, if they truly want to.

Great for you! Please do try your hand at whatever avenue you wish to pursue, but be aware that there are those 'professionals' that will look down from their lofty perch and try to tell you that you are not making 'Art', but art, and maybe not even that ...

Be careful what you wish for! Remember, quite a few people did not like what Deb Rockman had to say, and even Matt did not like the things I said about Deb's opinion. One of his 'friends' even went to the extreme as trying to label me as 'threatening'. Freedom of speech is one of the greatest things about our country, but most people only want to hear it when you agree with them ...

Why would you not like everyone getting to judge your art? As an artist I would think that the greatest hope you could have would be to get as many people to see your creations as possible. I have no worries about my work being judged by anyone; man, woman, or child. The more people that see it the better! I don't create the things that I do just to have them hang in my house for my own enjoyment, that would be selfish on my part. You say 'masses' like it's a dirty word ...

The 'art community' has a hard time reaching the 'average Joe' because of their continued 'desire' to be seen as 'professionals' to the point of coming off as 'holier-than-thous'. It's something that I think Matt and Deb Rockman can't seem to understand, and why so many people see them as 'art snobs'. If art can not survive on its own, then like an other enterprise, it deserves to die. As Thomas Jefferson said;"To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical." And that's just what we are doing if we let public funds prop up any 'art community' that seeks to survive on anything other than its own clientele. If the 'average Joe' sees nothing of redeeming value in the art that any 'community' produces, then he and others should not be forced to pay for others 'propagation of opinions'. I say this as an artist and a member of the Grand Rapids Community. I produce art. I sell art. If there comes a time when I can no longer sell my art, then I should not expect someone who does not like my art to pay for it with their hard earned money and effort. That would be criminal and tyrannical. A fellow artist has explained it possible better than I: http://www.tracyfineart.com/blog/?p=296

"While Artists are not Doctors, they do share that singular dedication and desire for professionalism and knowledge found in medicine and other professions such as the law, the sciences, the baseball. How does one get the public to understand that premise"? Speak for yourself here, not all artists have a 'desire' for elitism. Most handle themselves in a professional manner without the 'desire' to have to be something more than who they are: artists. "the baseball"? Hope you are an artist and not an English teacher ....

Deb has some points, if this were the normal run-of-the-mill kind of art contest where something like this could win: http://www.debrockman.com/waging/bitch.html . However, this is not your art teacher's, or professor's, kind of contest, where someone with a PhD judges what is and is not 'Art'. This is a better version of 'American Idol' made for the art world, where anyone and everyone can judge for themselves, instead of having a 'professional' tell them just what 'Art' is. Deb has complained in the past that the people of this region, and town, don't seem to have the 'courage' to buy her works. Most of the people I know who are not 'professional' artists or critics would find it hard to explain why they bought a wonderfully drawing of a dog with a derogatory word covering most of the picture. ArtPrize is not the Oscars of the art world, it's more like the People's Choice Awards, and to try to make it into the Oscars is to go against the spirit of the contest. Her statement about being a professional was elitist, and that is something most people can not swallow, along with her work. Art is what it is, no mater if the viewer likes it or not. It doesn't matter is it was created by a 'professional', an amateur, or a five year old kid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Kid_Could_Paint_T...
