"Critics of the ordinance say it will push more underage drinkers to house parties, putting them at greater risk." So let them drink in bars instead? This sounds exactly like the attitude that I absolutely can't stand... "If they are going to drink, I would rather them do it at home..." what a weak parent. Teach your kid right and wrong, to question, but respect authority and to obey the law.

Two wrongs don't make a right. Just because kids will continue to drink outside of the bar doesn't mean that they should be allowed to do so in a bar. This is about the bars in Iowa city being held responsible and not allowing them to contribute to the problem.

So you agree, save the smokestack?

Thanks for joining us, there is a false sense of majority here. This issue is being overdramatized by the commentary on this site. The source of the money has been explained time after time and there are still people calling this fraud. While government spending is a huge issue in this country today, there are still areas where that spending is responsible and productive, I believe that this is one of them.

Ok, sorry... the wherewithal.

Regarding the timing... while the city may not have the wherewithal or funds to preserve part of this complex, the federal government does.http://www.fema.gov/plan/ehp/ehplaws/nhpa.shtm

Yes, there is no such thing as free lunch, you are correct. In my opinion, preserving the architectural heritage of our community is not a waste, especially given this opportunity. Moreover, The suggestion that using FEMA funds for this project is fraud is ludicrous, this is exactly the intended use of these types of funds, otherwise FEMA would never approve the project. There is a difference of opinion yes, fraud... not even close.

Good idea, put the plaque on the smokestack!

I posted this comment on the last thread and it seems important to reiterate as these comments are off base. Eyerly's comment about the 2 million is not the intended funding source for this project. Just to clear something up, the monies that would be dedicated to the preservation of the Sinclair smokestack are not monies that could otherwise go to an individual flood victim, a new event center, better roads, library, etc. FEMA is reimbursing the city for the loss of this property, that money can be used for alternative projects. In addition, FEMA acknowledges that their participation in the demolition of these properties has an adverse effect on the historic resources of our community and therefore offers to contribute to a project (related if possible) that contributes to historic preservation efforts in our community; these are the resources that would be used.
