Yeah, I realized that a while ago too.

To the left, "looking at the complexities of an issue" is typically just short-hand for "I like this movie because it agrees with my side on this issue". They don't really want complexities; they just want reassurance that their stance is the correct one. . . , and that'd be fine as long as they actually ADMITTED that this was how they evaluated a movie; instead, they hide behind academic buzzwords designed to make their side sound deep and our side sound shallow and simplistic.

I never knew much about his personal life, but, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he had a history of heart problems. If this is true, that could more-or-less explain things. That said, I'll be paying close attention to any developments; given what you referred to as his stature, visibility and enemies, I'm not entirely ready to chalk it up to mere health problems.
