I would say that the books and the series are absolutely nothing alike. There are similarities such as Thayer having been gone and what not and the basic premise is obviously the same but aside from that, the show and the books could not be more different. I too was worried that the books would give away answers as I'm a watcher of the show myself but rest assured that they do not. :) I do like the books better however. They make more sense in plot and character and are a little more refined as I would say the show can be all over the place sometimes.

I would say that the theme of the book really pertains to friendship and self growth/understanding. Susane also has recurrent themes that run through all of her novels, mainly fate and also the subject of dreaming big, her characters having grand aspirations, wanting to find their place in the world etc. I hope this makes sense/answers your question. I have the tendency to blab on and on haha.
