I believe she is as well and I agree with your take on it. I think the movie happens at a point where her frustration with her daughter has boiled over to the point where she's (justifiably!) harder on her and finding it more difficult to connect. I absolutely agree re: the first scene in the car, and I think the movie desperately needed that open for the audience to see that there's love between the two of them. I agree with a lot of your complaints but I'm super white and look back at how annoying I was in high school. I don't think I was Lady Bird bad, at all, but something about seeing a interesting, striving, but generally terrible teenager finally break out of that mold works for me. The moment at college where she lied and said she's from San Francisco is the movie in a nutshell to me. It's sort of that nadir where you realize you're a piece of shit who just sold out everything that made you because it's not cool enough. So, I do agree with you, I mostly think LB is an obnoxious piece of shit teenager. Two side notes: 1: The rich girl lived in Granite Bay which was the rich suburb I often got dragged to high school parties in, and God were they equally as terrible as depicted there. Inexplicably, Eddie Murphy moved there when I was a teenager and, along with seven basketball players, probably comprised 98% of the black population. We always heard he had an elevator in his house. I would give anything to see what his house actually looked like because I imagine if I saw it now, as an adult, I'd sadly discover it's just another 1990 era McMansion built in the suburbs with a two tier pool and huge "bonus room", a concept I never quite understood. I feel like Eddie really could have been doing his crazy post-massive-fame period better. 2. Undoubtedly, the biggest flaw with the film is that it takes place circa 2001 in Sacramento and doesn't set LB's arc against the Sacramento Kings' season. In fact, I would rate the movie 10/10 if, at the end, her and her friend were suddenly whisked away to prom to by Chris Webber and Peja Stojakovich.
