Thanks so much for bringing this author to my attention. Her work sounds wonderfully original. I have made a note :)
Hi Becky, I can understand why you describe this as dull. It was the first of his novels I read, several years ago now, and I actually liked it. But have found the other novels I have tried by him quite dull. For instance Friends Lovers Chocolate, or something like that, is also in this series, and I didn't finish it because it was too slow. I have yet to read any of the No1 Lady Detective Agency books. I really must give those a go :)
I am so glad you loved this book. He had me in the palm of his hand right up until the end, when I thought it became just a bit too convenient. But I agree his ideas are timeless and the writing is exceptionally good.
I really enjoy Wyndham's books too. I have not read this one yet, but your review makes me think I would find it as interesting as you did. My favourite by him is still The Day of the Triffids, but I read The Chrysalids last year and really enjoyed that too.
I think I tried reading the Dubliners by Joyce at one stage but didn't make much progress there either. As to Our Mutual Friend, I am really enjoying it so far. I love Dickens too, and with his 200th birthday this year I thought I would start off the year by reading this. It is icredibly funny and witty in a sharp acerbic sort of way. I think this is the last full novel he completed before his death and I get the sense that he is expressing alot of his views on the page - taking no prisoners :)
Yes it is all a bit alarming :) I wholeheartedly agree if the worse thing that happens is it becomes more social than anything else, that can't be all bad. Plus I think the reason some of my colleagues and their friends jumped at this (I was so surprised, I thought it might be received as an altogether weird idea) is because they are parents of young children and feel a bit socially isolated at times. But yes, it is odd and slightly exhilarating finding myself the instigator of action. Frankly, even the idea of addressing more than one person at a time can be a bit daunting at times :)
Meeting for 10 years! Well you have obviously got a good formulae going with your group Melody. The rotation idea for book selection and venue choice sounds fabulous. I am not at all keen on being seen as a coordinator or chair figure. And you're so right, it would be far better if everyone's reading tastes are covered. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with me.
It certainly does help, thanks Beth. The taking in turns to pick a book to read seems to be a common theme, and makes alot of sense. I like how that person then offers a selection and the others choose from that. All these ideas help because I can at least now present my friends with something and see what they think. Many thanks :)
I think I will read The House at Riverton next.
