KATU - Portland, OR : Supreme Court rejects part of Arizona immigration law | National & World News | KATU.com - Portland

In 2010, Arizona received $1.46 from the Federal government for every $1 it collected in Federal taxes. If they secede, no more social security, no more Medicare, no more subsidies from the Federal government. Your suggested crackdown on illegals - which you seem to think would be cost-free - would never come close to making up for the lost revenue from the Feds. Have fun moving there.

From the real George Carlin: "Conservatives say if you don't give the rich more money, they will lose their incentive to invest. As for the poor, they tell us they've lost all incentive because we've given them too much money." You're proving him right.

The anger directed at the government presupposes that the government has a soft place in its heart for illegals. It doesn't. Politicians live and breathe by campaign contributions. Businesses pour money into politics to get the policies that they want. Our current immigration policy is a product of this political money - it supplies business with a cheap and disposable source of labor. An e-verify system would help curb illegal hiring and catch business that hire illegals. So businesses oppose it, spend money to get it blocked, and politicians oblige. This has been the situation for decades. And I'm not speaking for you. I disagreeing with you. No need for a hissy fit.

Yes it is. Do you think the illegal immigrants have a powerful lobby working in DC to prevent the e-verify system? Or is it the employers who might have such a lobby and who don't want to be separated from their cheap and expendable labor?

The enforcement is the policy. We have laws against hiring illegal immigrants - we just don't enforce those laws. When ICE raids a factory, it frog-marches the immigrants. Frog-march a few of the executives in these raids, and you'll start seeing results. Keep dreaming that you can seal the borders and round up everyone who is here already, and you'll maintain the status quo.

I do remember that - the same people who were angry then are angry now. They were incapable of rational discussion and solidly members of the Republican base. Like I said, instead of really, really, really hating Obama, now they can really, really, really, really hate him. So what? There were a lot of problem with Bush's guest worker program. The knee-jerk rage prevented any real examination of the issue - all to the benefit of the companies merrily hiring illegals.

Nevertheless, the anger is misdirected. It's easy to blame the people trying to escape poverty and taking jobs that employers in this country are anxious to give them. If you want to solve the illegal immigration problem, aim high at the rich and powerful people and companies that benefit from the status quo. If companies stopped hiring illegals, illegals would not stay here. This policy addresses the problem of those that are here. We can either keep them poor and willing to work for nothing, or we can let them better themselves and raise their expectations.

You're being undercut by the companies who are skirting the law in order to pay those low wages. You're being undercut by the executives who pad their bonuses with every cutback they send your way. You're being undercut by politicians who want to keep the status quo - not because they are worried about you (regardless of what they say) but because they want to please their big-time donors who want access to the cheap labor that current policy provides them. You are not being undercut by the kids of these workers (who do actually pay taxes). If you give these young people a chance to better themselves, then they won't be a part of the low-wage class.

Outside the constricted conservative universe, outrage against illegal immigrants isn't all that prevalent. As far as election year politics goes, now a bunch of people who were going to vote for someone other than Obama will go and vote for someone other than Obama with a bit more enthusiasm. So what? This action does nothing but give opportunity to a group of people who have stayed out of trouble- that's a good thing.

This is a great decision. These people have done nothing that any one of us would not have done in similar circumstances - they've stayed out of trouble and tried to lead productive lives. Now they get the chance to do that - and pay taxes. Sad that they also have to play the part of scapegoats for frustrated, angry conservatives who can't seem to function without heaping misdirected anger onto someone who has done nothing to harm them.

KATU - Portland, OR : Wash. whooping cough numbers continue to skyrocket | Health | KATU.com - Portland News, Sports, Traf

Vaccines aren't magic. They don't produce a force field that prevents a child from being exposed to a disease. They spur the body to produce antibodies that destroy antigens after exposure. So a vaccinated child can carry whooping cough bacteria while his/her body is combating the bacteria. During the interval between exposure and elimination, the bacteria can spread from the infected (and vaccinated) child to another person. During this interval, the child might even show symptoms of whooping cough, though the duration and severity of the illness will be less for the vaccinated child than it would be for an unvaccinated child. I didn't TD you.

So the Federal Reserve releases an 80 page report detailing the decline of the middle class, and the press can't understand it in any terms other than election year politics. This is a major part of the problem. The middle class wealth declined by 39% - that's what's important. How the two campaigns plan on spinning the report is not important.

Our other discussion was about healthcare. The power to provide (or not provide) healthcare already exists and is currently held by insurance companies. I'd like to see that power transferred to an elected government (fully understanding that nothing is perfect - but some things are preferable to others). The power to tap into email conversations is not something the private sector can legally do - this power was created especially for the government, and it has proven to be a mistake.
