IW, How about you approach the heads of STI Lilyfield, CDM, Snap, Sands, SOS, BHB, Finsbury, Pegasus (to name just a few) and see if they will share their experiences with the different manifestations of Max and in turn (if honest and forthcoming) may give you a flavour of the the buying principles of Max at work. They were all good enough to find Max on their own accord; then they qualified as top tier suppliers (in some cases up against BS and GEON during qualification) and appear to be happy competing and winning work at sustainable (albeit competitive) margins. If you are good enough you will find Max and keep Max as a loyal client(s). If you choose to deny that Max's principles actually work then you are probably disenfranchised somewhat by your ongoing dealings with less desireable print buyers. WE wish you well Bro :-) Adios

IW, thanks for the qualified support. My approach suggests the best competing against the best - so (1)first qualify to be the best and (2)then compete for work on the basis of being the best of the best - price, quality, service and (3)if successful in steps 1 and 2 then you will win work. Max IS a collective voice - so you won't need to search too hard to stumble across a MaxDebater :-) ......We're waiting Androod :-)

Yo Inky, as I said in my previous comment (and unfortunately Androod selectively missed it AGAIN!!) - there is nothing vaporous or phantasmagorical about a print buyer taking the time to check out a few financial indicators that will suggest whether a top tier supplier is 'waving or drowning'. In his infinite 'cut & paste' wisdom Androod left out my last sentence ..."Whilst not absolute, you will get a sense of who the dogs with the least fleas are." As I have said before, the best thing for a print buyer is to get their best top tier suppliers competing with each other and minimise dealing with financially unviable laggards. This aint consulting Bro - it's common sense and a fundamental responsibility for print buyers :-) This approach supports the use of well run businesses (I am assuming) like yours.

Numbers don't lie - PEOPLE do! Hence, to combat this phenomena of human nature my approach is discreet FACT based analysis conducted and tracked periodically, utilising the services of an accredited/independent third party that relies on a combination of direct and indirect financial information. Whilst not absolute, you will get a sense of who the dogs with the least fleas are. Feel free to pass it on to your learned colleagues :-)

Now imagine how you would be feeling if you were a buyer who did not do the homework on their suppliers' financials and now had a stack of work in progress in Chippo's manufacturing environment - or you had signed a long term deal with them and depended on them delivering on those contractual terms??? Chippo's may well punch their way out of this situation (and I hope they do) - however, in this market buyers need to play the long game to begin with ...do your homework and get maximum comfort that your top tier suppliers were a good chance of being around for the long haul.

You are spot on Bro re digital - and (to Inky's point) whilst I too can appreciate some of the obvious quality advantages that offset provides over digital, the majority of clients/end users DON'T - and that's why digital is going gang busters :-) Nonetheless, Inky you are a master of a great craft and you have my unreserved respect :-)

Good point - you see, however, there is a difference between a cheap/cheaper price (that is sold with a sustainable margin) and a rogue price (that is ostensibly sold at a loss to burn the opposition). Bunnings and Woolies always 'end up with the gold' - why, because whilst they may sell cheap - they DON'T sell at a loss :-) There is nothing wrong with cheaper pricing that results from the use of better technology, better buying power of raw materials or better cost management etc etc. There is something very destructive about cheaper pricing that results from a decision to knowingly sell at a loss.

I love putting out the bait for my Reptilian frenemy :-) Point taken re opening your fiscal kimono. There are very discreet and effective ways of assessing financial viability - plus financial viability is not the single filter but one of a few. Another is the assessment of selling prices through benchmarking and market intelligence. Good buyers do their homework and know a fair market price from a rogue price - rogue pricing comes laced with problems and good buyers understand this. If a price is too good to be true - then it probably is! :-)

Yo Fink :-) The PRE-qualification process allows buyers to align themselves with desired profile of suppliers from the start. Just like the Fed Govt pre-selected (based on a criteria) an 'approved/pre-qualified' panel of suppliers for Govt. Agencies to engage in bidding and job placement. I wonder if they did their homework on financial viability? The notion of the free market economy supports 'survival of the fittest AND the most apdaptive'. Buyers are asked to support this through fair market practice and not engage in practices that distort market prices through supporting 'survival of the unfittest' - by knowingly supporting competition between unstable/dodgy suppliers who supply ridiculous prices in the name of starving out their competition. Good buyers run regular financial checks on their top tier suppliers and they also undertake price benchmarking. If buyers do the right thing then the 'dream' comes alive and rogue suppliers (and their destructive rogue pricing) eventually fall away. All in keeping with the ethos of free markets. I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't live it :-)
