I'm reading thru the OT as well right now, chronologically. I'm in Ezekiel, but I have the same questions. I asked my (OT scholar) husband about it and he gave me some good perspective: I AM a person who lives thousands of years after this happened. My body of knowledge brings Christ crucified as I read about Moses. Its like a curtain on a stage is slowly opening to reveal the whole stage - we see more now than they did in the OT. We can't get rid of that knowledge, just like you can't get rid of the vision of the curtain being wider rather than just a slit. I can't answer your exact questions, but perspective helps to get your mind around certain 'why's'.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Phoning in dinner on Sunday night.

omigosh nobody cooks on Sunday night?? I thought i was the only bad mother? The only reason I did a load of laundry and got the kids to bed on time is that they would tell the teacher on Monday morning if i did't. My kids loved Sunday nights for that reason. They could eat just about anything and get away with it. Popsicles as garnish....... love it.

HA! I mean God's choice, not ours. (and quite honestly... the biology of it all... oh never mind) But as soon as he got here, he was so cute we figured we were just stupid to not think of him on our own.

Please let this be an apology on behalf of all these perfect parents: SO sorry. I was that parent. I had a perfect daughter - smart, engaging, cute, well mannered even at 2. Then we had her brother. We accomplished near perfect even tho he was a bit 'busier'. We were just The Perfect Little Family. We told everyone who would listen and some that wouldn't. Then God gave us, by Immaculate Conception, our 3rd child, a son. He knew no boundaries. He had the uncanny ability to upend his perfect brother and sister. We were outnumbered by thousands of little decisions before 7am that could ruin a day. We were totally exhausted and humiliated, all the time. James Dobson would have cried. This 3rd son is having a boy in January. BWAHAHAHAHAA.

Sports related commentary: Baseball would be quite a different game if you could take the bat with you while running the bases. Church planting commentary: Wish I could've carried a bat with me sometimes. My husband planted a church 10 years ago, clearly the best and worst season of our life simultaneously. God loves His Church, and I see that he cares about these folks even more than i do. That's really good news.

My understanding of this verse is cultural: burning coals were kept in every home for cooking and warming the home. Even in some 3rd-world countries today this is still the only means of cooking and house-warming. It was normal that you would need to go to your neighbor and ask for burning coals if yours had gone out. Heaping them was a means of blessing. Doing so for even an enemy might eventually turn that enemy into a friend. A much older Egyptian tradition was to choose to carry hot coals on a tray on your head as a sign of repentance. Seems to be a personal matter rather than one of giving to a need (in the Romans verse). My husband the scholar contributed to this insight. ;-)

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Asking people to "scoot to the middle" in church.

Let me say first off, you're not the one i was aiming at when I made the comment. There's a country mile between your circumstance and those who are entirely in charge of their own clock and still manage to get somewhere late. I had 3 kids under 4 years old at one time, I get that we can be circumstantially compromised sometimes. and God bless you for the 'single on Sunday' decision you have to make every week. A pastor made a calendered appt with me one time to discuss Sunday School schedule. We were both going out be out so we planned our meeting at a coffeeshop. he was 1 hour late. Came dashing in to tell me that he just couldn't get away from his last appt. I picked up my things and said, "sorry, i have kids coming off the bus." and walked out. That last appt. for him was important enough to make me take an hour from work and sit and wait for him. His actions told me clearly: "I and my schedule are more important than you." Sometimes we are unaware of when our decision about time (which is as important as $$) speaks of our willingness to truly submit. Too many people use it as a passive-aggressive way of being in charge.

Oh, God forbid he should TALK to you. Ha! We went to a family reunion and a cousin-in-law asked me "Is Uncle Joe saved? Cuz I have these CD's with me today and I would give one to him." So I said, "Um, I don't know... why don't you go talk to him?" She never did. And she kept tucking these CD's into people's belongings. Good time for WWJD.
