That's funny, I think I remember my grand-father talking about when the NHS came in and the family not having to find money to pay the (hated) doctors. Wasn't that the State?

I think what buried The Big Society the first time around was Eddie Mair's car-crash Francis Maude interview where he (very cleverly) asked how Francis volunteered in his own community (the link's below). I think that in the past it's sounded like 'You want a library service, well there's no money so you have to run it yourself). Understandably, this hasn't gone down well. I think people are only too willing to raise money, volunteer etc, but not because the state has pulled out.

The school my child goes to sent home a letter the other day saying that they were going to have to lay off support staff due to (among nother things) government cuts. This is the kind of doorstep issue the next election is going to be fought on...

This is fascinating. I think a big question is whether mainstream political parties need to get into bed with the new insurgents. You're quite right that although Trump, UKIP, M5S et al are great agent provocatuers, they don't necessarily want to be part of the establishment they rail against...

This doesn't square with my everyday experience. Our local rail service is terrible: over-priced, often late and unreliable. The service needs to improve massively before making claims like these.

Day one was ages ago. Whatever happens, we're going to carry the can for it.

I get you, but did you never, ever hold any beliefs that you'd now consider 'ignorant' when you were young? These are just kids, like yours, or mine.

I used to hold some mis-guided views when I was younger. Maybe you did too? I'm really unsure the best way to handle this to getting hysterical about 'a vocal minority'. I really worry we're heading into a US-style culture war where we just spend all day yelling 'libtard' and 'fascist' at each other. We need to listen more.

You are 100% correct. For years educating people was seen as a good thing, which should be free or very reasonable. What's changed? This is a massive voting point – I'd like my kids to go to uni (like I did). Why the hell should they be saddled with a ridiculous amount of debt? Also, as you say, there's no competition, and rocketing VC salaries make the whole thing look like a joke. It's a huge vote-winner for Corbyn...

I'm disappointed by that story – which seems more like Fox News outrage for clicks than the Daily Telegraph. The 'foreign billionaires are buying MPs/The Media' stuff works both ways (ie Murdoch / Cameron) and I think tends to stir up hatred rather than offer any solutions.
