FCC just needs allow obscenity but institute a "Swear Jar" where each swear word on broadcast or cable TV requires a $100 deposit to the General Fund. Poof! Disappearing deficit!

Breitbart.com : Group urges gov\'t to strictly limit chimp research

Who is doing research in Gabon? I would speculate this is funded by companies which are forbidden to conduct such research in their own companies. Is Gabon the country to which chimps are "rendered" for experimentation? I would like for the author to have discussed the situation in Gabon.

Big Government : Hillary Compares Arizona Shootings to 9/11, and Loughner to Al Qaeda Hijackers

Good list of salient points missed by Hillary. I am not surprised she couldn't see or make these points. I am happy to see she didn't try to praise/appease her audience by pointing out: 1) Muslims are more efficient at killing innocent people in public places. 2) Muslims are more tolerent of differing viewpoints as evidenced by the fact that a crowd of Muslims would never tackle a shooter while he was trying to reload 3) Muslims would never accuse the Imam in the rival sect's mosque of inflammatory hate speech.

Big Journalism : Juan Williams Is Right, Palin Can't Stand on Same Intellectual Stage as Obama

I see a lot of talk about "smart", "IQ", "intellectual superiority", but I have to wonder...in a list of folks who were/are of the true genius class, would I chose any of them to be the President? Albert Einstein? Stephen Hawking? Isaac Newton? William Thomson (Lord Kelvin)? Wm Shakespeare? Leonardo da Vinci? In other words, are we sure "smartitude" correlates with being a good president?

Big Journalism : WaPo's Richard Cohen Shows His Bias And His True (Racist) Colors In Palin Hit Piece

"The Huffington Post called that passage 'racially charged.' " HuffPo was right, but for the wrong reasons. Jeremiah Wright is so racially focussed that any reference to him and his teachings is automatically racially charged, regardless of the race of the person commenting.

Big Hollywood : 'L.A. Times': Films Must Stop Making Fun of Gay People

Makes you wonder. I always thought the epithet "Tea Bagger" was a slur drawing on a Gay reference. If this had been a term used by right-wing to disparage left-wing, the reaction would certainly been accusations of homophobia.

Big Hollywood : Davis Guggenheim Interview: On What Inspired 'Waiting For Superman'

I think we agree. Learning rote facts enhances decision making. Facts are grist for the mill in critical thinking. I taught HS math for a short while. The teachers who complained the most about having to teach to the test would give the student 2/3 credit on a homework problem just for trying to do it even if it was wrong (turn in your homework and you are guaranteed a D). I had students who complained when I gave them no credit for a wrong answer, but I also had students who told me I was the best Math teacher they had ever had because I took the time to write on their homework where they had made the mistake and how to do it correctly. These kids had spent years doing homework, the rote drill stuff, but none had any idea why it worked. Math was the same as casting spells to these kids...superstition, not thinking.

Big Peace : Where Do We Get Such Men: The WWII Vet Who Sacrificed More Than His Life - Part 3

I will definitely look for this book. I, too, studied religions, philosophy, and mathematics. I settled into Math because it is devoted to the search for Truth. I am currently a practicing Quality Engineer because it allows me to help people to learn how to work smarter, more efficiently, more enjoyably, and more profitably. The major hurdle is convincing people to search for the Truth of any situation. This is hard because it is difficult to get people to be honest about their errors. (Who wants to admit they wasted a millon of the company's dollars?) Most of my work involves education, and I wouldn't dream of doing anything else.

I strongly agree that critical thinking is important, in fact it is absolutely important. Teachers who complain about National Standards forcing them to "teach to the test" miss the point entirely. Any child who has been taught critical thinking skills can pass any standardized test. National Standards, at best, call for a minimum performance standard, and are used by nearly every commercial endeavor in the world. Companies that meet only minimum standards are usually forced out of the marketplaceby those who meet and exceed the minimum standards. Teachers who "teach to the test" should also be forced out of the marketplace.

Big Government : Rich People

The taxpayers only provide the base salary. The money that catapults them to wealthy status comes from other sources in their environment; lobbyists, "consulting fees"...you know, legal bribes. (As an aside, you know the definition of an "Honest Politician" is "A politician who, when bought, stays bought.")
