Interesting results in by elections for Seaford TC in East Sussex . 5 vacancies in 4 wards saw 1 LD hold 1 Con hold 1 Con gain from LD and 2 LD gains from Con .
Except that the Darwell by election was in the most prosperous rural part of Rother and certainly voted remain .
Interesting how despite big leads in national opinion polls , the Conservatives cannot get their vote out in local elections . Those who say that ah these are only local elections may reflect that only a few months ago before he was stabbed in the back by many on here , Conservatives under Cameron had no similar problem in getting their vote out in local elections .
In the last week , Lib Dem party membership has risen to above 80,000 the highest figure since 1999 . I have a feeling that in the next 2/3 years it will exceed the Conservative party membership ( though remain well behind Labour )
I expect we will see 2 more Lib Dem gains from Conservative in next weeks 8 by elections and a Lib Dem hold in North Norfolk .
We will see many more Conservative losses in the next 2/3 years as the normal pattern of mid term government unpopularity asserts itself having been delayed by the May honeymoon .
Another 2 years before new boundaries are finalised . On past performance the first draft proposals due out later this month will be much changed by the review processes .
Thought we were getting rid of many of these quangos and public appointments not creating more non jobs for our own boys and girls .
The thread writer seems to be arguing that big is best and bigger is better still . The reality of course is that inevitably bigger leads to bigger and more expensive messes and the change from annual elections to elections every 4 years means that the electors are powerless to express their disapproval for a longer period of time .
OK ish results for Conservatives 2 gains 2 losses . Conservatives won the other seat in Catterick more easily earlier this year in another by election . Conservatives also won the Gravesham seat quite easily in 2009 so although a Labour hold was generally expected it was by no means certain . The overall trend is for the Conservative vote share to be down on 2015 rather indicating the current national opinion polls are frothy .
