While I am awaiting the tools to post a new thread....Today in our class one of the topics that arose was the comparison between Socrates' charioteer image and Freud's image of the soul. Derk pointed out that the black horse and its desires seemed to have something in common with the id, and the charioteer with the superego or ego's negotiation of those desires. We also talked about one important difference between Plato and Freud: for Plato, the soul is ultimately oriented toward something outside itself, the forms, which it most deeply desires, while for Freud, the working out of desires vs society is an entirely internal tension. Plato's soul is more outwardly focused, and can, in fact, fulfill its desires where the soul is in harmony while Freud's psyche remains forever in a tension that it can at best release in healthier or less healthy ways. Thoughts from Prof Long's class? My class, did I leave out anything, or more thoughts?
