TechHaze.com : Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" Review

I see that our musical tastes agree where our theme tastes don't! Good points anyway. As it is famously said in the Linux world, it's all a matter of taste in the end, and there is no perfect ****** for everybody. Thanks for your tips. I didn't use any external storage device so I hadn't noticed that. Thanks :-)

I agree. As far as I can see, this release is particularly stable. I hope they'll keep this level of quality for the next ones.

TechHaze.com : Why This Ubuntu Fan Roots for Apple

Yes, but that's probably just because they realize that 1 offering would piss off the Ubuntu community. I don't have the impression that they are thinking about getting serious about Linux

TechHaze.com : Our GUI is getting old

I agree, but even opensource desktops should try to move away fro the norm. Gnome Shell is promising though, even if I'm not entirely convinced that they are doing it right. Ubuntu Unity is nice too.

TechHaze.com : Use GNOME, Pray for KDE

You have stability problems related to KDE? Which OS do you use? I agree about the "start menu" clone, it's just terrible. I wonder why it's still there; most people I know hate it.

That's how open source works, true, but most people can't program, even in the Linux world. For other distros, I'd say there is a lot more work to do than programming, but for Kubuntu it's mostly about implementing Ubuntu features and fixing bugs.

TechHaze.com : Google Buzz: Quality vs. quantity

I don't think Buzz can be compared to Facebook. The lack of symmetrical "friending" makes it more akin to Twitter. For a Google vs. Facebook comparison, we'll have to wait for "Google Me" (if we ever see it)

TechHaze.com : What Supercomputers Mean to Linux

I couldn't find "Linux and it's kernel" anywhere above so I don't see what you mean. The rest of what you say is absolutely true. However, I prefer to use "operating system" instead of distribution because I feel that distribution is too vague as a term. For me, Ubuntu, Debian or OpenSuse are OS's. Linux is their kernel. The reason why I don't want to use the term "operating system" when I talk about Linux propper is because it can't realy be used as a standalone OS (for most end-user -related tasks) and that it is replaceable (see Debian GNU/kFreeBSD, debian GNU/OpenBSD, etc.)

TechHaze.com : The Future of Our GUI is Demoed

I agree with you, but I think that more complex tasks in 3D are much easier to do when you actually interact with the machine in 3D, something that you can't do with a mouse, keyboard or even touchscreen. However, I think the point of this is intuitiveness. The mouse is a genius invention, but keyboard manipulation is far from intuitive. Also, gesture based interaction allied with other technologies may very well facilitate day to day tasks in the future, though I can't speak until I've tested it myself (which won't happen for a while)

TechHaze.com : Google Buzz: Quality vs. quantity

Hi ileane,

First of all, thanks for sharing you thoughts. I'd like to see hardcore statistics too, but I guess we would have to wait for Google to do that. Until then, we're left in the shadows.

I agree with you about ads and Buzz, but I don't think we should be all black and white.

The way it is, buzz can be monetized by attracting potential users to Gmail. If Buzz was to open to everybody however, that wouldn't work anymore. I like free services too, but there should be a way for Google to make profit.

Yes, I know about the extension. I've heard some users talk about it, but I've never even remotely felt the need to install it. If ever Buzz becomes chaotic I'll do so, but I don't see how that could happen anytime soon.

GNOME's nor really changing in anything. GNOME 3.0 is just some new features added, a new WM and GNOME Shell (which looks both both cool and a very good idea). There will be no 3.0. Instead we will have 2.32 with a new name. That's not a bad thing, but you can't say that GNOME has a new version coming soon, or that it will be revolutionized.

I agree with you, that's the way most distro's work: they chose the desktop that suits their purpose best and then do variants for those two or three weirdoes who like to chose DE's independantly from their distro. In Ubuntu's case, the DE of choice was GNOME. It was an intelligent choice at the time because KDE 3 did nothing to serve Ubuntu's interest. I feel like this has changed, and KDE would now be a better investment for Ubuntu than GNOME.
