Race Relations Project : South Park...off the hook?

I do not agree with people threatening or making a big deal out of South Park. Once again the whole point of this show is to offend people and make jokes about famous people or different groups of people. I mean don’t get me wrong, I am not Muslim so I don’t know how much this offends them, but I know personally I wouldn’t get offended if they made a reference to Jewish people and bashed them for something. South Park creators have the right to make a show about whatever they want and talk about whatever they want. If they weren’t doing something right, they wouldn’t still be on the air. In the real world, not everyone agrees on everything people say or do. That is just how it is. Jewish people and my religion have been portrayed many times on South Park and I don’t ever find it offending. That is why I feel this way about the whole Muslim issue. That is just me.

Shows like South Park and Family Guy are there for pure entertainment. That is my opinion and I think this way because if it was not for entertainment, then it would not be on TV anymore. South Park has been running for 14 years and is still going strong. Family Guy has been taken off the air multiple times, but always seems to make its way back with success. Creators of these shows get threats all the time because the shows do cross lines sometimes. That is what they are on the television for and why they are so successful.

When people think of South Park, they think of a ridiculous show that makes fun of everyone and many people find it funny. To me personally, nothing really offends me. I am Jewish and I hear all the Jewish jokes in the world. None of them really get to me and to be honest I sometimes laugh at them. South Park is a show that makes fun of topics and of course some people are not going to agree with it. It is almost like Sam’s class. Not many people agree with what he says throughout his lectures and many people get offended by it. Take the Christian Invaders for example. People flipped out on that lecture and did not agree with half of the things that Sam said. I feel like with those kinds of shows, you cannot really get offended. First of all, it is a TV show. Second, it’s a cartoon. Third, it is there to go across that line when talking about certain people or groups of people. For example, the episode about Tiger Woods. That was based only on him and took that to a new level.

Race Relations Project : What about the men?

I do not walk around campus see other guys in the gym or on magazine covers and be like “wow I need to be like them.” It isn’t something that goes through my head. The only reason I run or try to stay in shape is for health reasons, not to look good and impress everyone else. If you cannot accept someone cause they look different, then the person judging doesn’t deserve to hang out with you.

When guys go out at night, we throw on a shirt, some pants and shoes and maybe some guys do a little something to their hair. Girls get dressed, do their makeup for hours, their hair and then go. It is just a completely different lifestyle that one can compare to the other. Being a girl seems very tough through a guy’s point of view and being a guy seems like the easiest thing if you ask a girl. And to be honest it kind of is. One thing I think that guys try to fit in with is sports. It sounds dumb, but when there is a super bowl party you don’t want to be that guy sitting in your bedroom when everyone else is watching the game, drinking and having a great time. Other than that, I don’t see the need to fit in. Everyone is different and you accept that you cannot be like someone else. You will never be that model you see on the magazines.

Being a guy, I don’t feel any type of pressure to try to fit it or conform myself to be the norm. I personally feel like girls always see other girls with great bodies or whatever they see in them and want to be the same and try to change themselves to be that way. Personally, if I see a guy that is jacked or cut, all I say is good for them. They worked hard and got the results they wanted. I don’t care very much about how I look. I was made a certain way and that’s the way I am supposed to be. I have no problems with anything when it comes to body figure and being comfortable with myself. I couldn’t really care what other people think about me and I think that is the problem with females. I think they care too much about how other people judge them and what people think about their looks. I think it is a lot about personality and not so much looks. When I hang out with a girl I am a huge fan of them wearing sweatpants and not trying to impress and get all dressed up. To me it doesn’t matter.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

As far as Sam’s last question goes about how he is wondering how many men reading this would play this game with our other guy friends and a couple of beers? I play lots of videogames while drinking and hanging out with my other guy friends and this is something that will never been seen in front of me. Doesn’t matter if I am drunk or sober. There are a lot of things that run through guys heads when they are hanging out and drinking, but rape has never been one of them. That is something that has never been brought up in a conversation of mine. We have talked about all types of sex and everything like that, but not rape. Alcohol can do many things to some people, but it has never turned me into a guy thinking about playing a rape game. I just didn’t think it was possible for a man to create a game and actually produce it in stores that is about rape.

The only good thing that can possibly come from this game is to maybe stop real rapists from raping real people so they can take it out on the girls in the game. That’s still not good. I completely agree with when Sam says, “I really just want to know who thinks of something like this and then can find him or herself sitting across the table from their mother or sister or daughter sharing a meal.” Its true how can you play a rape game or actual rape someone and then look at a female straight in the face.

When I first saw this video about rape in video games I didn’t know what to think. I just thought that whoever created this game is one sick, sick person. Something has to be wrong with that person if you are creating a game where the idea is to rape a female by taking her clothes off and putting her in positions to do so. I mean I am sure there are those crazy people who find this game appealing and fun. Those people should be put in jail or a mental institution. Something is seriously wrong with them. This game makes Grand Theft Auto look perfectly fine. I didn’t think I would ever see a video game based on the idea of rape. It is even called Rapelay! I know that this game is sick and people who enjoy it are crazy, but look at the porn industry these days. You can find cartoon porn if you really tried. It is almost the same thing except you aren’t taking their clothes off. All of this involving cartoons and everything else similar is just not right.

Race Relations Project : What About Multiracial People?

It can be a tough decision to choose what race you want to be classified as but at the same time it can be kind of cool. You can get perks of each race. You have a privilege that many others do not have. When it comes down to it all, I think you should do whatever you want to do. If you want to play for the white team, then no one should stop you because you have both races in you. If you want to play for the brown or black team, you can do that too. I feel as if it is entirely up to the person what race they would associate with, even if it is not what most of the public would view their race to be. Live your life the way you want to and don’t let anyone tell you different. Whatever team you decide should be accepted by people because you got a little of it all.

Grouping people is not easy because not everyone looks the same way. If you grew up and were raised one way then there should be no reason you need to change that. If you grew up with your mother’s side which is mostly Hispanic, then I would consider myself to be Hispanic and the race doesn’t really matter. Growing up in a multiracial family is a special thing because you get to learn about different cultures and adjust accordingly. I personally wouldn’t know the feeling of a multiracial kid picking sides because I am on the white team and never had to think about any of that. There is really no set of strict guidelines, as we have learned, when it comes to race and ethnicity. If you want to follow the definitions here, this kid was correct when he said that "technically" part of his ethnicity is Puerto Rican and his race is white.

When talking about the white team or the brown and black team, to be honest, I don’t know where Spanish and Latinos stand. So I think you should choose what team you want to be on. I mean people classify you as white because your skin color, but if you’re not completely white then I don’t know where you should stand. I think it has a lot to do with how you feel. You shouldn’t categorize yourself with a racial group that you don’t want to because it seems as you’re definitely not completely white or completely black or brown. The fact that Sam has called you white I don’t think means much because it’s an initial reaction if you see a light skin person that you can’t really tell what they are.

Race Relations Project : What's the big deal with periods?

Sam isn’t on the most dangerous professor list for no reason. As far as asking in class if his wife would care about what he is talking about in class. I don’t know Sam’s wife and how they are at home, but if he is anything like he is in class, I cant imagine crazy topics aren’t talked about at the Richard’s house. I think this whole entire “bleeding” and period conversation got blown way out of proportion and shouldn’t have been such a big deal to most people.

As far as being proud to bleed, all the power goes to you. That means you can get pregnant and have a baby which is awesome. There is no need to hide anything and I think everyone should let it all out. If your proud of being a woman and happy to get your period then go ahead tell everyone. Good for whoever left this comment because she obviously doesn’t care about what people think. I don’t get why people are saying that there is no need to sit in front of a 700 people lecture and talk about a female’s period. It isn’t a big deal. You talk about sex don’t you? That is a private topic also. I guess I see it in a different way than everyone else cause I really don’t care that Sam brought it up in class and used the word bleeding. Everyone knows that when you’re talking about a girls period, she is bleeding anyways.

When Sam started talking about his wife’s period and bleeding and all of that good stuff I thought the reaction was funny. If you looked at how many people got up and left the room it was amazing. After reading some of the comments, many people are saying its uncomfortable and guys think it was weird. Personally, I thought it was hysterical and I think Sam is out of his mind. That’s what makes this class so great. He says whatever he wants and nobody is going to stop him. You can try to argue with him, but there isn’t a chance your going to win. I think many people overreacted about this whole topic. Like he talked about in last class, it is a natural bodily function that happens every month for women. I don’t think it is a big deal for this to be brought up in class. He compared it to cutting your toe nails. You do that every month most likely also so why can’t you talk about a female’s period without everyone going crazy. I also think that girls take things like this too serious. Guys don’t really care about talking about “private” things in public.

Race Relations Project : I Reckon She Can Hit

Finally, I think she has nothing to lose. If she doesn’t do well then she doesn’t, but if she does well it could be a good story. I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a movie about this in the future. This is something in history that is possibly helping break down the wall of equality between men and woman. Personally, I am all for her coaching a men’s team and if they have a winning season. I hope she has a good first season and leads her team to some victories. It could potentially be a great story that can be the first time this ever happened in the history of football. This can start a trend for other women out there wanting to pursue a coaching career.

Some people might take this differently and see a woman walking on the field beside her team of guys and think it’s a complete joke. That’s just how some people are and think that men’s sports should only involve men. People might boo, people might yell, and some will cheer, but she should be ready to hear it all when she enters the playing field. Even though she seems nice and shy during the interview, you can tell she has that feistiness about her and she will be ready to go. If I was on her team I would be a little scared to hear some of her locker room speeches. She can probably get very loud and scary.

Antoher reason why people shouldn’t have a problem with this is that she has the experience and knows the game very well. She has a certain love for the game of football and has a great passion. If she goes out on the field and leads her team to some wins, she is going to look like a star and its going to be a big deal when it really shouldn’t be. Rise and fire. She has wanted to play football in high school and finally got to play on the Divas so she knows the game pretty well and most likely knows what she is doing on the field when it comes to teaching the kids how to play.

Personally I think this is a great story. I don’t think many people should be surprised by a women becoming a head football coach at all. Women are starting to get into the whole being involved with men’s sports these days. I think that there is one female coach in men’s college basketball currently also. You can also look at the NBA as an example of women integrating into men’s sports. No one ever thought that you could turn on the tv and see a woman referee running up and down the court during a mens game.

Race Relations Project : What's With the Theme Parties?

Anything but clothes parties don't have anything to do with race. Golf pros and tennis hoes is basically a party for guys to wear polos and girls to wear almost nothing. State Patty's Day was for drinking mass amounts and wearing green. Mix and match parties are to take every color clothing you can possibly find and wear it all at once. Jersey Shore parties are to gel your hair in ridiculous ways, look like a guido and pump you first. No theme party that I can think of has to do with race and discrimination against black people. Everyone has theme parties to change it up once in a while and have fun with it. Aren’t Christmas parties or Fourth of July parties considered themes too? I just think it ridiculous to bring theme parties and race in the same question. It doesn’t make sense to me and kind of bothers me. Parties are to go, get drunk, have fun, and meet other people. No one is trying to discriminate or be racist towards anyone else. For some reason, everything that occurs always comes back to the race talk.
