Helping the "less fortunate" does not the mean subsidizing an expensive and wasteful bureaucracy for the purpose of building a new political power base.

Big Journalism : Hey MSM, Obama Fans -- About that Che Guevara Fetish of Yours...

I remember watching a documentary on the Cuban Missile crisis (on the History Channel, if I'm not mistaken), that revealed that while the ballistic missiles were not yet operational, the Soviets did have tactical battlefield nukes avaiable that could have obliterated the U.S. Marines ready to land on Cuba's beaches! Good thing Khrushchev came to his senses....Then again, I'm sure he was shook up when that Russian SAM took down that U.S. plane, against his orders. Another one of those incidents...goodbye world!

Phillep said: "You assumed Filipinos feel some sort of solidarity with Japan based on a relationship dreamed up by Europeans? " Manila2010 replied: What kind of question is that? I never even hinted on what you just said.... Yeah, I suppose when you mention to your Japanese friends the necessity of removing children of Japanese ancestry from orphanages and not allowing non-Japanese spouses to gain custody of their mixed race children, all for sake of maintaining national security, they would all nod in agreement and shake your hand....Ha! Give me an hour with these folks and allow me to reveal what I know, and they would probably hang you afterwards...lol

You are an amusing fellow....How else would I consider someone who advocates a policy that requires the removal of children from orphanages and from their parents merely because of their ancestry....You have a very twisted thinking process for you to suggest that I advocated "not doing anything" about Japanese expansion. But of course, the blatant racism in the U.S. at the time made it difficult if not impossible to recruit Asian-Americans for secret missions against Japan prior to the war......You are so full of "assumptions," all of them wrong...lol

Regarding the "sneak" attack on Pearl Harbor, then Vice Admiral Bull Halsey would not have been privy to any info. It would have only been FDR and his closest advisors. Things are becoming crystal clear! Now, it seems perfectly clear even more why the courageous Admiral James Richardson was relieved of his command! If Stinnett is right, then OMG, all those brave people who died....and they didn't have a fighting chance because the government didn't let them.... But I want you to look at these and comment. I'll add a few more links for your info on another post since I think I am limited to just two per post: http://enjoyingthejourney.blogspot.com/2008/12/no... http://www.independent.org/newsroom/article.asp?i...

Yeah, but you were giving validity to a policy that any reasonable person today would find reprehensible. I may have repeated something that common knowledge, but the truth of it does not appear to resonate with certain people...And by the way, I never acted like I alone had information that no one had. Given that the information is widely available, the more that you should agree that internment was an unnecessary injustice. Besides, how could you adequately defend an opposing viewpoint knowing what we know of the event? Can you really justify a policy that required removal of children of Japanese ancestry from orphanages and from their non-Japanese parents all in the interest of national security?

You are making "assumptions" about my relationships with relatives and friends in the Philippines...May I ask why? There must be a reason, because to any casual reader, you do not make any sense at all.....Please answer that question...why would you assume that I don't keep in touch with relatives....Kay ano nga nasiring ka nga diri ko hera inaasi? May ada ka gud problema....It is such a joke, this discussion....Japanese-American children were even being removed from orphanages...Non-Japanese spouses could not gain custody of their mixed race children....If you had 1/8 or 1/16 Japanese ancestry, you could be subject to internment....It is amazing how lame your excuses are.... You believe all that talk about "secret societies" and "fifth columns," what a joke! All written by Americans, often blinded by racism and bigotry, that they couldn't prepare an objective intelligence report on the subject...When it became painfully obvious that these innocent people were harmless, men included, they were released...If indeed there were "saboteurs" and "traitors" one would assume that they would unite and strike at military and civilian installations in different parts of the U.S. or engage in some terrorist act against U.S. civilians....Guess again....NADA! Nobody who was ever interned was ever linked to sabotage or any related activity during the war....Incidentally, I know all about American "pragmatism." During the turn of the 20th century, it meant burning down towns and villages indiscriminately and the slaughter of thousands of innocent civilians....Try to defend that if you can! So, to ask you that question again: Why do you make such "assumptions" about my relationships with relatives and friends in the Philippines? Don't avoid it because I will ask you again and again....

"A country does what it thinks is necessary during a time of war." That kind of thinking is what got thousands of innocent Filipinos slaughtered when they fought for their freedom against American troops during the turn of the 20th century. And you say, "not much to confront?" You know how ridiculous your statement sounds? Should Japanese-American orphans have been considered a threat to national security? What about children of mixed parentage? Explain why they had to suffer the same fate....Also, explain why people who were released because the government realized they were never a threat, could no longer reclaim their previous lives, during the war.... I also question those so-called intelligence reports because they were written by people who exhibited a certain bias, and lack of objectivity. Anyone could write a report identifying any group as a potential threat. Didn't Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano identify Iraq and Afghan military veterans as potential domestic terrorists? If the U.S. government actually believed that traitors and saboteurs were among those interned, it would have kept men behind the barbed wire for a longer period of time, instead of letting them loose. After all, if some of them were indeed members of "dangerous secret societies," what would have stopped them from attempting mayhem against military installations on the East Coast, for instance, or from engaging in acts of terror against American civilians...You come up with very lame excuses.... You ought to recognize the fact that Japanese-Americans existed outside of mainstream American society and treated as second class citizens. In states like Calfornia, they were subject to a number of unfair restrictions. White Americans found it useful to use them as convenient scapegoats, and even now, people continue to make excuses for American racism and bigotry. Since you say you are not horrified by such injustice, it has become increasingly clear to me now why many people around the world hate Americans.....It is partly due to the stench of racism and bigotry that still prevails in the hearts and minds of certain people in this country, and no matter how they try to conceal it, it still slips out....

I recall reading that when the U.S. and the European powers protested Japanese expansion in China, Japan correctly replied that it was sheer hypocrisy considering that these countries had pretty much carved up much of Africa and Asia for themselves and the U.S. had seized territories through military action, as well. Now, I am certainly no fan of the Japanese invasion of China and of any other country, but the British had colonized India, Burma, Australia, Malaya, etc. The Dutch ruled what is now Indonesia. The French controlled what was then known as French Indo-China....The U.S. had the Philippines....Yet, they all complain about Japan in China...Again, I am pretty much anti-colonial, but I have to point out the sheer hypocrisy of it all....I am certainly against aggressive, military-based territorial expansion as practiced by the U.S., Europe, Japan, China, and any other power.....

"Go For Broke," I used to give FDR the benefit of the doubt, but I think there is strong circumstantial evidence that FDR knew or should have known Pearl Harbor was going to be target sooner or later! FDR transferred the Pacific Fleet to Pearl Harbor in 1940 despite protests by then fleet commander James Richardson that the new location provided little protection from enemy attack. (the story is in a biography of Admiral Richardson entitled "Countdown to Pearl Harbor"). I recently read a report stating that back in 1938, Admiral Ernest King (U.S.Chief of Naval Operations during WW2) had conducted a mock air attack on Pearl Harbor (it was a navy refueling station back then, I think) and it proved its vulnerability. Previously, the fleet was headquartered at San Diego, which is the most practical place to put it if the U.S. is trying to defend the West Coast. The report also went on to say that FDR's decision was meant to antagonize the Japanese rather than to protect American territory. Obviously, Pearl Harbor is a lot closer to Japan and the rest of Asia than San Diego. In a recent book entitled "Preemptive Strike" and in a 1991 20/20 segment on ABC News, we learn of documents that reveal FDR's secret plans to bomb Japanese cities using U.S. bombers with Chinese Air Force markings, but the pilots would all be American! FDR authorized the plan in July 1941 at around the time he imposed an oil embargo on Japan! Discussions about the secret bombing had been circulating for quite some time and the Japanese actually got wind of it in May 1941, and subsequently, the U.S. found out that the Japanese knew about the plan! As for the attack on Pearl Harbor, it was no secret that the FDR knew that a naval fleet had just sailed out of Tokyo Bay and it would have been ridiculous to claim that he did not to think that Pearl Harbor was not a valid target....Despite radio silence, the U.S. knew that the fleet was going to strike somewhere....Pearl Harbor was just too far away, some people have said.... Was that reason not to adequately notify Pacific Fleet HQ? Given rising tensions between the U.S. and Japan, Pearl Harbor should have been at a state of readiness. But the U.S. knew that the Japanese spies were watching Pearl Harbor very closely and would have reported back that base was on high alert and the planned attack would been likely cancelled....Incidentally, was it just a coincidence that none of the U.S. aircraft carriers were present the morning of December 7, 1941? And also, the majority of the fleet was out at sea, as well. Contrary to what I've read in history books, the Pacific Fleet was far from crippled after the Japanese attack.....

The "truth" that the internment of persons of Japanese ancestry was completely unnecessary. That the guidelines included children of mixed parentage. The non-Japanese spouse could not gain custody of his or her half-Japanese child. The child had to be interned. Even if a person had as little as one 1/8 or 1/16 ancestry (meaning even if one had just one grandparent who was Japanese), he or she was subject to internment. The same applied to children in orphanages. The government made no provisions to respect property rights. Japanese-Americans often had very little time (I think it was less than a week, if I'm not mistaken) to settle accounts (i.e. sell houses, business,etc.). Also, they were not allowed to return to the West Coast after being released, meaning that even though the government found no reason to further detain them, they were forbidden to reclaim property, businesses, etc. It is fair to say that many if not most families ended up destitute. How many business owners would hire a person of Japanese ancestry at the height of World War 2? How then could parents support their families? Think about it. That is why people are truly horrified about the internment of Japanese Americans. There is also no evidence that anyone who was interned and later released participated in any subsequent actions related to treason and or sabotage. So much for "intelligence reports" of a vaunted 'Fifth Column" and those "secret societies" who vowed to "fight for the Japanese emperor...." They were nowhere to be found among those interned....

I agree with you, man. I am a friendly, easy-going person by nature, but I am absolutely shocked by some of the things I have read here.....Come to think of it, as for "Bob," "Phillep," etc, I think they pretty much know they are wrong, but are too proud to admit it....Do I really believe that "Phillep" would advocate sending Japanese Americans behind the barbed wire, under the conditions I described in my question? Somehow, I do not think so....He cannot say otherwise though because then, he would prove himself wrong.....Hysteria, racism, and greed were the main reasons behind the internment, and none of them are valid, by any proper moral standard or reasoning.
