Crasstalk : Photo Phriday - Let's Get Crafty

Thank you very much for the compliment! It's actually my camera, it takes amazing pictures very easily. And I love detail, my house is just brimming with it (some might call it clutter.) Having a terrarium is like having a miniature eco system for your viewing pleasure. The layers, I think, are fascinating to look at, and watching plants grow is always interesting- at least to me! They were really hot in Victorian times and the 70's. It can be an art form too, as you arrange the plants, the objects the way you like. There are some really cool examples on Flickr if you are so inclined.

Not at all! I threw this one together pretty quickly. You just have to put rocks at the bottom (get em cheap at $ store), then some kind of moss (got it free from my trees), dirt, then you can plant small plants or green moss (I collect moss from sidewalk cracks!) Jam it all in a jar and there you go. I got this big jar at Target for $14. You can also do it on a smaller scale, but then you have to work with a smaller opening. Just keep it watered and with a lid, condensation builds up- you just have to watch that things don't get overwatered. If you go to Flickr, you can get some real kicks by searching "terrariums" there are some awesome ones out there!

Crasstalk : FLASHBACK FRIDAY!!!

This song makes me feel EXACTLY the same as I did when I was five years old riding to school in the front seat of my mom's yellow VW Bug, probably not wearing a seatbelt. It gets me every single time I hear it- it's like a mini time machine!
Crasstalk : Late Night Open Post: Bark at the Moon

I know how you feel. I got really excited when I got a star on G. TV, until I realized they gave them to everyone and it didn't translate to any other G. site. And I was always frustrated for never getting a star on the "real" site. I felt like I was saying some interesting things sometimes and I just wanted to be in on the conversation. It became this really dumb goal to get a star- and now I couldn't care less. Crasstalk has been great, because I finally get some interaction. Just after a few weeks and I feel satisfied that I have some sort of voice- I haven't been back to the other place since. I only ever went there to read the comments anyway!

I had to look up "Tales..." I would have dug that as a kid. I would listen to my parents stereo albums trying to hear things go back and forth on the headphones while trying to have an out of body experience (sans drugs.) I am also reminded of the Dick Van Dyke show, when the neighbor Jerry invites Rob over to listen to his new stereo system with the recording of train sounds- "It sounds like a train is going right through your house!" or something like that.

I was a total disciple of The Smiths/Morrisey from age 18 to 28. I know those songs so well, they are etched on my DNA, I'm sure my children will be able to sing them on first listen. I just sang this song over New Year's on Guitar Hero or Rock Band at a friend's house. I got the timings and all the hills and valleys just right, I knew it so perfectly, it was disturbing.

I agree. As much as I adore being able to just buy one song, especially when the rest of the album is awful, iTunes has really killed the album. I have to really love something these days to buy a whole album. I do enjoy being able to hear a theme across a span of music- instead of disjointed songs meant to stand on their own.

Okay, I'm totally nerding it up now- this just happens to be one of my favorite subjects. Did anyone listen to the NPR show Weekend America? Well, one weekend there was a story about mixed tapes and mixed tape clubs. The reporter then solicited listeners to write him and he would match up 12 people randomly to form a mix CD club. I was matched up with a group who inexplicably decided to call us Mix-Moo. It lasted for one and a half years. It was pretty darn fun and I got some excellent music in the process and only one very strange CD filled with new age music and talk radio snippets. But alas, I made no lasting friends. One day the CD's just stopped coming and our shared blog faded away. I just realized, I don' t really make mixes anymore, I let Genius do it for me. But I also don't have the kind of time I used to have!

I had a basic tape recorder, you know the kind the police interrogators used to have? I would put the tape recorder on it's side and my clock radio on it's side with the speaker and microphone right next to each other and also wait for those good songs to play. I was such an expert at it! I was too poor to buy tapes and records, so this was the perfect solution! I continued taping songs off the radio all the way through high school, especially after I discovered college radio. I wish I still had those tapes! My favorite thing is sharing music- especially when someone hasn't heard the stuff I'm giving them.

Geez. I was just thinking about mixed tapes today! I used to get really obnoxious and tape movie clips between songs, from movies playing on the VCR. I remember sitting there for absolute hours at the dual tape deck timing the songs, the spaces, rewinding to make sure I got it, then listening to my masterpiece at the end. I would design tape inserts by cutting out pictures from magazines ("Interview" was my preferred go-to) and laboring over the handwriting. Making a playlist on iTunes is just not the same. People just take the MP3's off and put them in their libraries, I don' t think they listen to them as a whole like you used to be forced to with tapes. It just ruins all the hard work of telling a story with your songs!!! I didn't think anyone appreciated my mixed tapes for as much thought and effort I put into them... until I visited my friend last summer and she opened up a box on her bookshelf- still full of the tapes I had made her. I nearly cried!

I resisted that show for so long, tried to avoid the zombies that kept telling me how great it was. But then one day out of boredom- watched it and got completely hooked. And dammit, I miss Loralei Gilmore and all of her forced, sometimes fake, screwball wittiness!
