we don't know that though. THEY may not know what sirens really look like. Hell, RR made it seem like there was on 3 sirens in existence. You're the one that's reaching, so desperate to have them be the fish monsters, despite there being evidence to the contrary

oh come Luke, we have no idea what a siren is, or what they actually look like. Any depiction of sirens in that book shown in RR can be explained by watching the final showdown during RR. Sirens can physically appear to be earth ponies (or what ever you get with those wings), but have the singing magic that conjures the fish monster constructs, just like the final showdown. Anything we say is headcanon until it is entered into the main series. I personally prefer the pony siren to fish monster sirens

retcon what? we've never seen them in Equestria. We've seen depictions in that book, but we don't know if those were their actual forms. I'd like to know where you're getting the idea that Sirens=fish creatures.
that's assuming a lot. We never seen natural born Sirens in Equestria before. Since RR happened. and they got hit with the rainbow, it could have done more than just shatter their gems. For all we know, they've been depowered to the point of becoming earth ponies when coming through the portal.
we don't know that. We assumed they were based on the closest thing to canon we have, that one comic. I've always thought they were ponies based on the merchandise, and hasbro's desire to sell toys. The fish creatures we saw during RR weren't the sirens themselves, but merely projections of their power. I suspect that's why ponies remember them as fish creatures, rather than ponies.
I'm going to say the same thing that i said about Duke Nukem Forever. "what the hell have the developers been doing for all these years?!"
