Your guess about the evolution of his army seems pretty accurate. I don't see anything wrong with doing that though. That's basically adapting to GW's fairly consistent power creep model.

I have a couple of comments, totally unrelated to your tactics. Your game against the young kid is yet another reason W/L/D tournaments are far superior to battle point tournaments. In this tournaments format you would be a fool to not crush the kid. This might turn off a newer player from tournaments or 40k altogether. In a W/L/D tournament you just need to secure the win which doesn't require total humiliation of the opponent.

Your second game sounded like a horrible experience. I echo that you shouldn't have sworn at the guy and you pretty much admit the same thing. I'd probably have sworn at him and then regretted it too. Also, I totally would not allow someone to use my dice. I would request that the game have been a default win because he didn't bring a printed, itemized list (didn't the tourney require it)? I'd also have requested that the Draigo model be removed from play as it's not WYSIWYG. I guess i would not complain about the LR/SR proxy unless it looked like I would have worse LOS to the conversion model. Although, LOS to a SR should never really be a problem.I thought these were standard rules at 'Ard Boyz.

Out of curiosity, what do you think of this setup:

Ten man squad, same equip as in your version. But with a psyback. Leave 5 guys with their psycannon on an objective in cover, send the other five out in the psyback to claim/contest/harass the opponents.

I'd say you failed at your goal by not providing a better alternative solution. Essentially you said, "you are dumb for doing what you do" without providing a better way of doing it. This is not convincing.

My main issue with the post is that absent a better objective method to judge an army or a player, then tournament results are the best method and not something to be derided.

This is a truly useless post. Provide solutions, don't just regurgitate what you learned in class and stick 40k stickers all over it. If you had bothered with a conclusion this might have been worth reading (with vast amounts of editing).

I have to agree with you. The FAQ telling you to 4+ the rules inconsistencies is embarrassing. If they really cared about good rules they'd never put that in.

Thanks for the great post. I was in the sticks with no internet access and this post was like a "welcome back to the internet award." From the sound of it, the explicit upfront costs are less than I expected (I thought they'd be around $15,000 or more). But the implicit costs are much more substantial than I thought they would be.

It seems like running a store will practically devour your life when you add up everything you have to do. Especially the community building, non-standard customer service (never thought I'd see a game store manager waiting for a customer to get their cab safely before going home), and learning about all the products you stock.

I am curious, is your store the only game store in town, and did you do any market research before starting your business? I'm very curious how you would go about doing market research to determine the demand for a game store, especially in a region with no game store.

I have always preferred the idea of tournaments that keep painting and competition in their own separate category. Subjective judging is unavoidable in a painting competition, but I prefer it not muck up competitive ranking.

I'm really looking forward to your next post! Thanks in advance!

I also didn't think about it in my earlier comments about what makes a good FLGS, but TheDude is right on. A store keeping steady and generous open hours is something that should be rewarded. It feels terrible to drive down to your FLGS ready for a pickup game and some purchases to find out that they randomly closed early.

It's nice to see your store strives to do it right, even though it must create headaches and inconveniences.
