Once again people are driving like idiots. How many times does it have to be said that when the traffic lights are out you are suppose to treat the intersection as if it was a 4 way stop? I sat on 1st ave and 32nd st ne for 8 minutes as idiots just blasted through the intersection. Finally a guy just pulled out and basically sat there and let some of the cars on 32nd st go through.

Where would the world be if Hawkins, Reeves and the hundreds of others who make or made incredible contributions to our society be if they just pulled the plug? And I don't want to hear about how this man wasn't any of these people. The truth is we won't know what he could have been and the course the rest of his life would have taken because we has a society let him take his own life.

KCRG : Iowan to Receive Medal of Honor in White House Ceremony Today | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News,

We have two marines, a son and a daughter, in our family. Our son fought in the city of Ramadi and lived through the war in Iraq and yesterday our daughter landed in Afghanistan. Our son was injured twice while serving in Ramadi; once when an a blasting cap placed within an IED went off (The IED had been submerged in a sewage drain dampening the powder so only the blasting cap exploded.) and the second time while on patrol through the city. Our son, Jonathan, is a machine gunner and his first injury happened when an IED exploded under his feet and a junk of steel flew through the air tearing off the tip his ring finger. His uniformed was covered with raw sewage and his ears ringed for hours as his team mates and company commanders explained to him just what had happened, the shock wave had literally blew the sense out of him, and how he was that days luckiest solider. His second injury occurred has he was jumping over a short wall while his squad took on an enemy attack. Our son is responsible for operating the M240G, a 25lbs piece of angry steel that fires the 7.62mm (30 cal) round and is used to first suppress enemy fire, then to gain fighting superiority. While on a typical patrol, for what these marines called typical, his squad came under fire. Not knowing which of the many buildings facing them that the fire came from his unit took immediate cover. For my son this meant jumping over a 4' breaker wall built to separate home from city while caring and readying his machine gun to provide supporting fire. In the tense action that followed our son managed to rip the muscle in the wall of his stomach leaving behind a hernia that he lived with till just a few months ago. During World War 2 Adm. Chester A. Nimitz is quoted has saying that "...uncommon valor was a common virtue." Many people are going to ask if Staff Sargent Giunta deserves the highest honor our country to give to a fighting man. In my humble opinion only a vet that has seen action, that has lived those moments where time stands still and the rush of facing an uncertain truth takes over every part of your being, can answer that question. For his part my son says yes.

If we lived in your world then no one, expect a person who shot someone in front of 100 people while standing over a body screaming I did it while being taped by four television crews as he hands 20 cops the gun. would ever be arrested let alone convicted of a crime. That is if you could even have a trail because no one would become a judge or attorney and no one would ever serve on a jury.

GazetteOnline.com : Father of girl hurt at Bellevue parade sues carriage driver

I actually rode horses in both pleasure shows (I bet no one commenting here has ever heard of the Iowa Rim Rock Riders Horse Owners Association) and with the AJRA (American Junior Rodeo Association ) and can tell you that *hit does happen but, it really shouldn't. The driver of the team needs to insure that all of his equipment is in good working order and is installed correctly BEFORE he ever leaves the trailer. In this case it is self evident that there was a failure with the bridle and it should have been noticed before the accident. A bridle is a very simple device (consisting of the brow, nose, cheek, head and chin straps, the bit and the reins) that has been around literally as long as the wheel. I was taught from the age if five that you must inspect each part each and every time you saddle/harness up. Without a properly fitting bridle you have zero control over your horse/team and that is where the neglect comes in. There is no excuse for not checking your equipment and folks with his years of experience there is no excuse for not seeing a defect in one of these. If there isn't a defect in the bridle then it wasn't fitted properly. If there is a defect then he should have seen it and fixed it before it was ever put on the horse. A properly fitted bridle cannot just fall off or come off from rubbing, period.

GazetteOnline.com : Mid-1970s flood-control research rediscovered

I was just a kid when DAEC went on line but I can remember the argument that a damn and reservoir would have produced the same amount of power for less money AND would have provide flood control for the area down stream. Maybe it's time to decommission the plant and do what was right thing to do back then. It would take a lot of pressure off of Coralville and add a huge boost to the local economy.

If you are acquitted then, even with new evidence, you cannot be retired on those same charges. However he was never acquitted so the state still has the right to pursue the original charges. Now lets say that the state was seeking murder 1 and he was acquitted then a large amount of new evidence was uncovered; the state could not retry on murder 1. But if enough of the evidence points to manslaughter then the state could ask the courts to pursue those charges.

What confidentiality information on you do you think the police have? The last time I looked the police only kept criminal records and did not keep track of relationship status, sexual orientation, political affiliations or any other kind of "private" information . As far as any other kind of information (s.s number/age/previous address) all that is given to the LL before the rental agreement is signed so that they can do a credit check. As a LL I would never rent to someone without doing a credit check as I wouldn't want to entrust my 130+K asset to just anyone, would you?

I've got news for you, alliant doesn't own the transmission lines anymore and that is part of the reason why they want this rate increase. The article points right to this fact. As far as the kinds of competition, well you would have those that used NG and those that used coal vs those that might use trash and so on. In fact it has been shown that opening this up to a competitive market does indeed lower the cost for everyone.

Yes, they may have to listen. Because they are a monopoly the government stipulates that there must be a consumer advocate, a person not employed by the company, whom will act like a defense attorney. Their soul purpose is to audit the company to make sure their profits do not exceed the state regulated amount and that their capital funding is used for the improvements they say they are meant for The advocate must approve every rate increase. Though the company may start collecting the increase right away those that s/he rejects must be sent to aberration. If the aberration board agrees with the advocate, or lowers the rate increase, we get a refund. Historically the aberration board has allowed a slight increase but, I do not believe, that they have completely rejected a rate increase.
