Except that we do need to be able to project power. We have agreements with Australia, New Zealand etc. Yes it’s easy to say stuff them but they came to our rescue in WW1 and WW2.

I agree with you in that it would have been better to stay out. But if you go in you need to go fully at it otherwise good people die needlessly. The govt refused requsts to put more helicopters in, Equally there was a needed requirement for tanks but we had to rely on other countries to provide when they could.

You are correct in that the Navy sold its soul to get those carriers. Now it does not have enough to ships to properly defend those carriers properly. I seriously doubt there is a Govt with guts to deploy one of these carriers in a war time situation as the cost in lives and money if one was sunk would be horrendous. Worst still Cameron’s decision to reverse his initial decision on having full on carriers (cats and traps) back to jump jets. Result you have no airborn radar (helicopter carrying a small radar does not count in my book), no airborn refuelling ability, aircraft that can carry hardly anything due to weight restrictions all amount to two very expensive white elephants that cost us a decent size navy.

Except when you get in an Afghanistan or Iraq situation where we didn’t have enough soldiers to do either.

I dread to think of our levels of war stocks for missiles and other ammunition. Not much point in having shiny new ships and planes if we don’t have enough ammo to last more than a couple of days. I expect levels would shock everybody.

That is such a silly argument, the enemy will also have the same or more fire power. Numbers count be it either men or equipment. If you need to hold ground eg Afghanistan you need large numbers of soldiers to spread around, otherwise you fight to take the ground and then have to give it back because you don’t have enough men to stay. By the way most of our ships don’t aren’t fitted for ship missiles, the type 45 is slowly being given the launchers from old retired ships.

No question the Forces are in a right mess at the moment. When the Army was 104 thousand strong belong 10% down in numbers was not good but just about manageable, at 84 thousand strong 10% is horrendous. Although it’s spread across all arms and services it equates to 13 infantry battalions. Putting recruiting out to a certain company was/is a complete disaster (done by the Conservatives). The company have completely failed despite being warned by army recruiters their plan would not work. This needs to come back into the forces.

I doubt we could field a 100 tanks these days and a lot of the armies current equipment is based around Afghanistan equipment which would not be suitable for war fighting. MPs love to send our forces all over the world and crow about them being the best but sadly they don’t want to pay for them. Many years ago the military used to say one day we will lose, well we already have twice. Iraq was an embarrassment as the forces simply could not commit enough forces to the task and as a consequence we took casualties that the MPs could not take and the army ended up bottled up at the airport unable to do anything without help form the US. Same applied to Afghanistan no where near enough troops to hold Helmand province. Fight and lose people to take a village , only to pull out a few days later and let the Taliban back in. A waste of lives.

If we want strong forces then we need to cough up for them and look after them.

Good grief this man has only one aim which is power at any cost including the country. He would be an utter disaster for the country and any Tory MP that has any involvement in helping him into power will need instantly kicking out of the party with any honours stripped.
