The Wild Hunt : Louisiana's Religious Freedom Act and other Pagan News of Note

"Lunamoth's point (I think) is that the press is twisting the wording of the sentence to make the public feel that Wicca itself supports child molesters." - This, exactly. I don't give a rat's butt whether someone wants to say they're Wiccan even if they've never heard of Uncle Gerald. My point was use of *precision* in language. The statement 'he led a group said to be _based on_ the Wiccan religion' is not the same as 'he claimed to be Wiccan'. But you know, if those who wish to take insult because I ask for a little more clarity in phrasing are happier in their disdain, so be it. We have this whole great big language that we've put together so we can communicate, but I guess it's better to be sensationalist than concise.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who was a little shocked at her phrasing. "spreading" wicca and paganism? No thanks...

I didn't realize that Wicca was also an ethnicity. Please, enlighten us M.C. ETA: My point being - there are paths that, for the sake of shorthand, will say "we are based on Wicca - but we aren't of a Wiccan lineage." And before you get any other ideas, I'm not a Wiccan myself.

Am I the only person who actually sees a difference between "said to be based on the Wiccan religion" and actually being Wiccan? Many paths are BASED on Wicca, but the association stops there. Just a tiny point that irritates me.

The Wild Hunt : Quick Note: Yoga is Hindu

I practice Yoga. There are several "styles" offered at my studio, including Kundalini which is most definitely linked to spiritual practice. But while we do start and end our Hatha classes with chant, it is definitely Westernized so as not to freak out the locals too much. You can go as deep as you want to within the school, into Vedic studies and such, as far as the spritual side, that's certainly on offer. But most people go to work out the kinks from working in an office all week, rather than get in touch with their Prana. So I think it's a little bit of both; what we're taught in Western society is more often than not removed from the spiritual origins of Yoga, but I personally practice it with a spiritual eye, considering caring for my body as *part* of my spiritual practice. I am, however, confused by Deepak Chopra's words. I used to like him, as a speaker. But the quote cited above seems to contradict itself quite a bit.

The "Proof by assertion" logical fallacy, exactly. "A lie told often enough becomes the truth." - (often attributed to Vladimir Lenin, though I can't be sure since it's on teh Interwebs.)

The Wild Hunt : Quick Note: The Dangers of Megareligion

THIS EAXCTLY. I grow quite weary of people telling me that all the gods all lead to one greater Deity, even if my system of belief says the exact opposite. It's condescending at best and insulting at worst.

Kind of surprised to see Salvia Divinorum was missed in their list. EDIT: Oh, nevermind, I see this bill is for Louisiana where SD is already banned.

Your description of your husband's Methodism sounds like that of my grandmother. Glad to know I didn't dream that, since I was trying to describe it to someone once and couldn't find a source to back it up other than my memories.

The Wild Hunt : First They Came for the Swingers

I live in Texas. Yes it is, often depicted in a circle. Even at the Capitol building. Shot of the Capitol. Pentacles appear on old church buildings as well, throughout the country. Here's a church in a town I used to live in: Note the pent below the steeple. Sorry, not a strictly Pagan symbol.
