Go to user/library/preferences and delete the itunes plist file. Fire up itunes again and it will open as though it was the first time. Your playlists and everything will still be there. No need to search for music etc. Now you'll see the backup option return!

For those with battery drain on 3GS (may be the same for 4) on 4.1 who use MobileMe: I narrowed it down to permission issues in my address book. Every time I opened the phone app I noticed that the spinning ticks wouldn't stop spinning. The phone got bloody hot. I did some digging and saw some suggestion that it may be the push email settings. So I deleted my email accounts, reset network settings and rebooted but nothing worked. I checked the address book permissions and they were read only so my address book was trying to populate through mobile me but it couldn't. I changed my permissions and voila. All good on 4.1.

iphone 3gs, jailbroken os x ppc pwnage 4.1.2 prepared 4.1 software I used pwnage to get in to DFU mode but the counter froze at 7 seconds on 'leaving home button' pressed. I can get into DFU mode but it's not pwnage exploited so I continue to get 16xx errors. Within 5 seconds of releasing the home button, the phone boots normally. i also used the same process on a 3G and had no problems creating a custom IPSW or getting into pwnage assisted DFU. But not on the 3GS. I tried multiple times (even after desktop restart). I even uninstalled (mac cleaner), rebooted and re-installed iTunes Any suggestions?

Accident: Accidently - applies to events that occur entirely by chance (: an accidental encounter with the candidate outside the men's room); but it is so strongly influenced by the noun “accident” that it carries connotations of undesirable or possibly disastrous results (: an accidental miscalculation of the distance he had to jump). An accident is something that couldn't have been avoided. Upgrading to 3.1.3. is not accident as you have to directly interact with upgrade process. Neglecting to read the prompts is not an accident, it's 'neglect', 'impactience', but an accident it is not. Nope! But it is an unfortunate 'incident'. Relax, just having fun!

You have the latest iPhone 3Gs which has a different boot rom. These boot rom's plugged the untethered 24kpwn exploit that has been used by the DevTeam for a while. What this means to you... Until an untethered jailbreak is released (I hear it's a matter of time!), every time you reboot your phone you need to re-jailbreak it with Blackra1n from your computer.

I have a very dirty workaround for PPC users having trouble with custom image. Assuming you have managed to make or acquire a jailbroken image... Your image will be accepted and restored by iTunes if your phone is already jailbroken. Try using Quickpwn for the beta 5 ipsw (you'll need the beta 5 image too) It seems to work on the new firmware. But Remember this inserts old software on your phone and you don't want that so YOU MUST make sure to upgrade with your GM release custom IPSW. Run Quickpwn. Mine only ran halfway and froze. I thought I'd bricked it. Regardless, I did a hard reset in the middle of the frozen jailbreak and put the phone in DFU mode. Open iTunes, restore using your custom image.I am now on the full GM release and jailbroken.

Another method if getting the package on to the phone is to make sure you are jailbroken, change the ATT_US.ipcc file extension to zip and the unzip. Once unzipped open the payload folder and you'll find the ATT_US.bundle. Use disk aid or a ssh in and place the bundle file into root/System/Library/Carrier Bundles replacing the one that's already in there. Reboot.

Not not Cydia. Just search google 'download ATT_US.ipcc' download the file. Open iTunes, press 'option' then click 'check for update' and select the above referenced file. I just noticed that I was unable to select the file in iTunes 8.2, so don't upgrade iTunes until you've updated your iPhone with this package. And if anyone else has better info on this, please correct me.

Little foot note re tethering in the U.S. As you probably know ATT is not allowing tethering yet. BUT if you download the ATT_US.ipcc (the tethering carrier package) and upgrade through iTunes while you are still on 2.2.1 and then upgrade to 3.0 you'll find tethering still works perfectly.

I bet Apple's watching this blog right now with an alternate ipsw ready to release, different BB or BL. It's almost like a 'who blinks first' contest. So Apple if you are watching, the Dev Team are as relentless as you and they simply won't blink until you do. So give it up and release your firmware already so we can get our jailbreak on. Way to go Dev Team.

If you're on iTunes 8.2 on OSX, quickpwn won't work. Apple made a change to the USB protocols. Dev team (correct me if I'm wrong) indicated they didn't think this was a deliberate attempt to sabotage the jailbreak but still it no longer works with Quickpwn. You'll need to use a PC instead. I also made this mistake and tried manually removing 8.2 and going back to 8.11 but Quickpwn still isn't working.

Minor correction - it's bootloader 5.08 that you need to downgrade your baseband (which I executed and it worked!) If it's 5.09 or higher then you're out of luck. I downgraded after upgrading to a 3.0 beta with a completely different BB (baseband) way above 2.30. Good luck

I had my phone exchanged and was trapped with 2.2.1 on 2:30 bb. I was thrilled when the BB downgrader appeared and worked flawlessly allowing me use of yellowsn0w again. But the downgarder was specific in the bootloader version (which I fortunately had). So my question is.... Is the bootloader hardware based or is this upgraded through software updates? Could I potentially upgrade and jailbreak 3.0 then reapply the BB downgrade and the yellowsn0w or would my bootloader be updated by installing 3.0.

Are you guys working on a lower-level unlock? I saw a couple of posts elsewhere citing that apple firmware would unlock the phone if you lived in a country where the iphones are legally unlocked. If this is so, couldn't we run through a proxy server in the country where iphones have to be unlocked and then do the update? And one other thing... You guys rock. Thanks so much for all your hard work.

I'm not trying to be fecicious but if you're remotely uncertain, just disconnect from your router/modem. If there's no internet connection, it can't download the update. If you already downloaded it, go to your home folder/library/itunes/iPhone Software Updates/ and delete 2.2.1
