What is your point in trying to alienate boomer conservatives? We are as opposed to the R. Paul/Paleocon anti-semites as you are, maybe more so, but you never pass up a chance to take a swipe. Seems to me you'd want all the friends you could get.

Let's face it, everyone uses generalizations if it supports whatever particular argument they are making. And in fact many generalizations are true. "Italians like spaghetti and meatballs". True. "Englismen drink warm beer". True. "Germans enjoy hiking and singalongs". True from what I observed. The problem is when people use generalizations that are not true, and continue to use them even when they know they aren't true. Because they just cannot give them up or their entire argument takes a hit. Of course, if their listeners are on the same page, then it doesn't matter. Everyone's happy as a lark to go along with the gag.

Hmm some good points. But do you think non-Boomers will be any less "suckers for technology"? I doubt it. In fact young people today would go through withdrawal if they couldn't twitter, or text, or order up movies online, or play with their wee-wee, oops I mean Wii. They are way more hooked on tech than older folks. And please tell me how boomers are any more pain-avoidant than you are?

Well I couldn't say who looks more foolish, and I realize you have to write about something. But if at least once a week you read some blog post about those silly, destructive GenX'ers and how they've ruined the world or some such, then I'm sure that you'd have a comment about it, Ms Five Feet of Fury :) And frankly, the whole thing is sort of like someone complaining about those awful 50's greasers with their slicked down hair and hotrods. I mean for the most part they stopped being greasers a long time ago didn't they.

Hitchens is obviously a man of great intelligence and broad education. Whenever I have read his articles I've always been impressed by his ability to quote obscure figures and events in such as way as to suggest that we should all know who and what he is talking about! I admire his courage in taking on the left and even old friends such as the weasel Blumenthal. As far as his contradictions and refusal to renounce old positions, I view that as nothing more than stubbornness and contrarianism, and I understand his unprovoked attacks on Judaism and Christianity in that light.

Bestiality in the town square is a clear imposition, a disturbance of the peace or nuisance." It is a clear imposition because it would be considered immoral and offensive to most people. Otherwise why bother? After all, no one's rights would be violated if it were legal. That's why picking your nose in public is not illegal, but the above example would be. It's all about drawing the line somewhere. The problem is that these days there is not as much broad agreement as there used to be. And to say that controlling pot use is going beyond the mandate is still just disputing where to set the limits.

Libertarians always pose as clear-eyed realists who never let a moral argument interfere with their judgement. They always argue that the 'social conservatives' are merely statists in sheep's clothing. But what it all comes down to is a matter of degree. In fact the libertarians do draw lines, I would argue, based on moral standards. Just off the top of my head, maybe they would object to bestiality in the town square or whatever. It may be that decriminalization is the better alternative in the case of pot. I don't know for sure. But really it is just a difference of opinion on where to draw the line. Libertarians are actually claiming the high ground just as much as they say that social conservatives are. They just do it based on different standards. *edit*Ok, I see that Calvin Freiburger made basically the same point above. 9 hours ago. Oh well *

You make some good points badaboo. I am a boomer, I served in the military at that time (in Germany, not Viet Nam). I never took part in any protest or denigrated my elders and my betters. Whenever I see these "My destructive Generation" type posts I always think, "Who are they talking about?" Not me or my friends or family. It's like saying that everyone who lived in the 20's was a flapper, or every Italian who loves in NYC is Mafia. It's just a cliche.
