I thought her design rocked this week...well, before she drew all that line crapola all over the place. I think Emily was right about the drawing. The judges got it wrong this week. I don't really care whether she can get along with anyone. She just needs to get along with the clients. If she'd drawn that stuff all over my wall, I would have made her remove it at her expense.

I think a couple of the individuals came to the forefront this week. And I have to agree with you about the individual competitions. They are always so much better.

seems like they are more interested in $$$/drama than finding anyone with real design talent.

How very interesting that I am the 5th commenter. HGTV/Design Star please take note of this fact. Usually there are at least 100 comments. If I were management for HGTV I'd be pretty worried about my job.

SO, really, if Nina did all that wavy drawing/painting on my walls, I'd be really upset. I thought her design rocked BEFORE she put the other crapola up there. Emily was right about the line drawings. The judges got it WRONG.

Was Casey present during this design week? I did not hear her speak or see any part of her design. Seems to me someone else (Kim Myles) skated through the competition being quite and below the radar.

I'm so sick of all this backstabbing. It's like watching politicians. HGTV, you've gone so wrong with this show. You need to get away from the "drama" and back to some real "design" competition.

Why is Nina always picking on Stacey? Can't she just do her design job and shut up?

Tingoat: If I understand Joan's post correctly, I think she was saying she would have long steps, the length of the deck, going off the back instead of off the side of the deck. You could put flower pots on each end of the steps and maybe 2 clustered together in the middle in front of the steps that would "caution/alert" people. Maybe put a handrail in the center of the steps also. And once people were aware of where the steps were located, it would no longer be a problem. Of course, you'd need some lights installed on the steps for night time use.

I rather like her idea of moving the steps to the back of the deck. You could always have stairs going off the side also. Maybe those would lead towards the garage.

I think the blog is drying up because most people, like me, are bored. For the past four years the BCB has been great fun. This year, not so much. I was very excited about doing a reno instead of brand new construction. But our choices have been limited and we are not hearing anything from Mary or Watson. I don't expect we'll hear anything from the builder/designer. In general, I only comment if something peaks my interest.

Since the economy is so bad, and not much chance of a real turn around for a number of years, I decided not to enter the Dream Home sweeps this year. I could not take the chance of winning the home and then worry about bankruptcy trying to pay taxes and waiting to sell the place. And, I've already lived in that area of New Mexico and don't want to go back there.

In New Mexico, we lived at 7,200 feet. We routinely got below zero. Had up to 2 feet of snow during any snow storm. Temps in the summer were in the high 90's. Our deck was installed in the south facing direction. It was exposed to the sun baking down on it. We never had any problems with our deck. Of course, we did not use TREX. We used TimberTech, which is a much better product.

It's not a matter of where you live, it's a matter of the quality of the product you are using. I would never use TREX.

I voted for the basketball area because I thought it would be the easiest to convert to something else. I don't know why they give us these "specialty" items. None of us seem to want them. Maybe the winners want it in a different area than DIY will install it.
