Kel does say something about no one questioning her right to fight Joren. A duel itself wouldn't have been the problem - they probably happened with enough frequency not to be significant politically. The problem would have come from Kel thoroughly beating and embarrassing Joren publicly - the reaction Ol' Burchard of Stone Mountain had when he blamed Kel for killing Joren via the Chamber would have been nothing compared to if she'd thrashed Joren like Alanna thrashed Ralon, giving him a legitimate reason to blame her.

I'm not sure Kel would have used that privilege well, though. As much as we all would have loved to see Kel beat the pants off Joren, it would only have made the Kel/Joren feud worse, as it did for Alanna when she beat the pants off Ralon of Malven and he came back as Claw...

hmm definitely always uncomfortable about Berenene and Briar - while it may not become inappropriate, it will never not be unhealthy. Did that make sense? I appreciate/like her as a character but I also want her to go away here.

I love Rizu! Daja has good taste. I also missed the clues here, no, honestly, I missed every clue. All the clues. But when I finally did figure it out I was really happy that it was Rizu. One of the things I love about Daja is her ability to see the beauty in everything, especially her work but also in culture and architecture and conversation. She spends so much of Cold Fire admiring the people and the life they've made, and the city they've built. Rizu's so polished, not just her looks but her personality, she's just the sort of person Daja would like.
