I'm replying to you almost a year later, but I thought while I was here I'd respond to your question.

The way I understand it, the UT is basically mechanical telepathy-- it reads your thoughtwaves to say what you mean, not what comes out of your mouth. So if you deliberately use an idiom in another language that you expect the other parties to be able to follow, it leaves it untranslated.

We have some evidence that gems may have names or nicknames denoting specific variants that aren't considered an entirely different caste of gem-- Bismuth mentioned a Biggs (probably Biggs Jasper) and Cr*zy Lace (probably Cr*zy Lace Agate) among the Crystal Gems, and Holley Blue Agate shows that Homeworld does it too.

But that delightful mystery aside, I noticed in Mark's last review that he spotlighted Topaz as, thankfully, finally breaking a chain of butch gems being portrayed negatively, and I thought I'd add that I think the Zircons here are pretty butch? They aren't wall-of-muscle style like Jasper, Bismuth, and Topaz, but especially Blue Zircon is broad-shouldered and the placement of their gems (? that's their gem, right?) evokes a bow-tie as much as a cravat for me. Shout-out also to the Famethyst, because most of them are more Jasper-like in appearance than our Amethyst!

Not to mention, on the protagonistic side, we've got Ruby and Garnet, neither of whom are exactly what I'd call lipstick. And in terms of femme antagonists we've got BD and Aquamarine, and Navy's probably the most femme of the rubies as well as the nastiest.

It's more than just being blue-- the entire color scheme-- red hair, white clothes-- matches up.

Plus, you know, the whole hatred of humanity.

Sort of. I saw it more as a parable about allyship, which really made it click for me.

Hey It's That Guy: Over the Garden Wall Edition!!

Janet Klein plays Ms. Langtree, a schoolteacher with the blues.
Her only other notable acting role is an episode of Adventure Time. She may be better known for her Dixieland Jazz revival band, Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys. I was gonna post a song by them, but IntenseDebate is being uncooperative.

Sam Marin plays Old Man Langtree, Ms. Langtree's father.
Marin is a regular (no pun intended) on Regular Show, where he plays Benson. He's also done episodes of Gravity Falls and Adventure Time.

Thomas Lennon plays Jimmy Brown, Ms. Langtree's wayward lover.
His most well-known roles are as a member of MTV Sketch Comedy series The State's regular cast as well as Lt. Jim Dangle on Reno 911.
He has also appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Archer, The Dark Knight Rises, New Girl, How I Met Your Mother, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Bob's Burgers, Another Period, and Santa Clarita Diet, mostly in minor roles. He's also a screenwriter-- he notably co-wrote Night at the Museum and its sequel.

Hey It's That Guy: Over The Garden Wall Edition

This show has a pretty small cast, so it should be fairly easy!

Elijah Wood plays Wirt, a teenage worrywart.
Mark Does Stuff readers will certainly remember him as Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings. Other well-known appearances from him include The Adventures of Huck Finn as Huck, The Good Son as Mark, Oliver Twist as the Artful Dodger, Deep Impact as Leo Biederman, Spy Kids 3D as The Guy, Sin City as Kevin, AKA That Yellow Bastard, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as Patrick, Happy Feet and its sequel as Mumble the Penguin, several video games in the Spyro the Dragon series as Spyro, 9 as 9, Beck on Tron: Uprising, Ryan on Wilfred, And Todd on Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

Collin Dean plays Greg, the purest child ever.
Collin's only got a few credits to his name, so I'll list the lot. He was Hiroshi in the English dub of Welcome to the Space Show, Tiffany in Adventure Time, a child named Fred in Halo: The Fall of Reach, Ruprecht in Krampus, And Lincoln Loud on The Loud House. He also provided additional voices for the movie Hotel Transylvania and the TV show Doki Adventures.

Christopher Lloyd plays the mysterious old Woodsman.
I'm sure Christopher Lloyd needs no introduction, but Mark Does Stuff readers will remember him as the devious Commander Kruge in Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock. Other well-known roles of his include Taber in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Reverend Jim Ignatowski on Taxi, John Bigboote in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Dr. Brown in the Back to the Future Trilogy (and many, many other spinoffs and parodies since), Professor Plum in Clue, Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Merlock in Ducktales The Movie, Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, Al the Angel in Angels in the Outfield, the librarian and the titular character in The Pagemaster, Sebastian Jackal on Deadly Games, Rasputin in Anastasia, Harold March on Stacked, The Hacker in Cyberchase, and Professor Hargraves in Granite Flats, among many, many others.
