Big Hollywood : Liberal Movie Critics Decry Pro-Military, Pro-American 'Act of Valor'

Again with the name-calling. Yes, that marks you as a true genius. And fascist? Not only unoriginal, but based on your previous remarks about me, incongruous. There are very few incontinent, non-military adoring fascists out there. Or, to be more precise, none. But I must be one, because your massive yet incurious brain says so. They say the sign of a genius is the ability to understand two contrasting ideas as once. Judging from your comments, you seem to have problems dealing coherently with one.

No I don't what? Appreciate your son's service? I'm wondering through what wondrous act of mind-reading you were able to draw that conclusion. Because I'm not all tumescent with excitement over some movie? If that's the case, it's a pitifully low threshhold to judge someone. And how dare you! You know nothing about me. My father served in WWII and I take great pride in his service. A photo of him in his Air Force officer's dress uniform hangs above the fireplace of my home. His "Ike" jacket is one of my prize possessions. One of my best friends lost her brother in Vietnam, and I've seen how that tragedy can affect a family. I donate my time and money to military charities, including helping a disabled Korean War veteran with his oral history. But you're willing to dismiss this because I might not share your opinion about "Acts of Valor." I hope you're pleased with yourself. I would like an apology from you, not only to me, but to your son for devaluing his service in the belief that only people who agree with your politics can appreciate his bravery and valor. As my father told me when I was a kid, when he was performing his missions, there weren't Christians, Protestants, Jews in the plane, only Americans. It's a lesson you might want to learn

Ooh, "The Crying Game"! I guess you chose that because it has a penis? And why yes, I have a penis too. But that fiesn't mean I have to act like a dick. Obviously, that hasn't stopped you. And I haven't made any decision regarding the merits (or lack of same) of "Acts of Valor." I was simply pointing out that pans of the movie were not limited of "liberal" critics. And for Tver record: "The Crying Game"? Meh. Overrated. I prefer "Red River."

No, but you might notice the "perhaps" in my comment, which implies I was not making any kind of a definitive point. What cannot be denied is that critics on both sides of the aisle (so to speak) find the movie dramatically wanting.

Oh,dear oh, dear. You folks do realize that "Zionist" is a pun, a malapropism or, for those of you who move you lips when you read, a joke. AMPAS stand for "Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences," and here is a character...you know, a fictional figure, who mishears it as "Arts and Zionism." Perhaps not the best gag ever, but nonetheless, to all but the most dense and humorless, a joke. While it might be a radical idea here, not everything is political. We now return you to our regular right wing hysteria.

And before anyone accuses me of mis-categorizing Smith's review, here's the money graf: >>The overall feel of “Act of Valor” is not that of battle-tested hard men chewing over war stories, but of outsiders sucking up in an effort to be granted honorary membership in a club they can never understand.<< Zing!

I notice you don't mention righty Kyle Smith's pan of the movie in the NYPost. But then, that would undermine your thesis. Perhaps critics were responding to a not-especially good movie and not said movie's politics.

Big Hollywood : Hollywood Still Eager to Cut Checks for Obama

Nice job of defecting , JimMcVeigh (and what a lovely handle you've selected). Unemployment was at 10.4% in January 1983, and the deficit was 16% percent larger than it was a year before. Don't see how Keystone has any effect on gas prices; even if it was approved, it would be years before any oil was added to the national supply. As for the correlation between the GOP and the lowering of the rating of US bonds, it's a little thing called cause and effect. The rating agencies didn't take action until the House threw their tantrum; they agreed to raise the ceiling after the rating was lowered.

When Obama took office, the economy was heading down a steep road in a jalopy with bad brakes. While I don't agree with everything he's done (Tim Geithner, for one) the fact that he managed to keep it from careening into the chasm is reason enough to support him. The lowering of the US rating can be laid at the feet of the House GOP, who acted like a bunch of cranky children about the debt ceiling, but, thankfully, has not had any affect. The rise in gas prices is due to the Iranian embargo (and the lack of improvement in Iraqi oil production....hey, wasn't that going to fund the war?)

Wait, I thought that deficit spending was supposed to drive up interest rates....now you're complaining that interest rates are too low? And correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Ryan budget plan advocate turning Social Security into that wildly fluctuating stock market (as did GW Bush, but I know how you folks hate mentioning that). It would be nice if you could find an argument and stick to it

Big Journalism : Want to Help Blow the Dog Whistle On the Media?

This gets better and better. The press abridges the Freedom of the Press by exercising said Freedom. It I didn't think you were serious, I'd say that was a real knee-slapper. On the other hand, you could just have a limited vocabulary, and don't know the difference between abridges and abuses. I'm sure you'll enlighten us all. And just to be clear, how would you @sagemagos make things right? By telling the MSM which are the relevant stories, what portions of speeches must be quoted, and which facts are true? Yeah, that spells freedom!

Nice try. Let me get this straight. If a rule (and how does a rule differ from regulation in this context? Is passed) as a safety precaution, it gets a pass? So I guess you have no problem with the Clean Water Act? That was precautionary as well. Stop playing semantics and start confronting the implications of your statements. And calling FNC a "small start-up company"? Now I know your joking... or, if not joking, delusional. FNC may have started out smaller than it is today, but it has always been a unit of News Corp aka 20th Century Fox (see how that works?) one of the largest news, information and entertainment conglomerates in the world. But hey, even accepting your laughable contention, how, then, does FNC differ from CNN, also a cable-only news source that started small? As to your numbers, they are so inane (where did you pull them out of?) that I'm not even going to comment

I'm also a bit confused, @sagemagos. You claim the MSM is abridging the freedom of the press? Not sure how that is possible. The MSM is part of the press, or am I missing something here? And I'm not sure how they can abridge themselves. Doesn't the First Amendment mean they can publish whatever news and opinion they want, as long as it's not libelous? And again, the concentration you bemoan is the result of the lifting of regulations that limited cross-ownership and media monopolies. And this might surprise you, but we agree on this point--I'm not a fan of media concentration. But there are conservative newspapers and magazines out there, and the Internet allows all voices to be heard, including this little bit of swampland card the Bigs.

Wow. Just so we're clear here, @sagemagos, you're upset because Clinton lifted an FCC regulation? (I wouldn't repeat that too loudly here, someone might start calling you a socialist). Besides, isn't that a manta here: the less regulation, the better? If the lack of regulation means people you might not like consolidating power, is that an unintended consequence, or the invisible hand of the market. Besides, my dear @sagemagos, you left out a studio. Fox not only owns a studio, but a TV network, newspapers, magazines, satellite companies (aka distribution) and, oh yeah, Fox News Channel. I'd say that's a pretty big omission. Or do you only have problems when you perceive the ownership as "liberal"?
