Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Hobby Lobby.

I was honestly kidding about the dirty, but abjectly ridiculous when it comes ot corporate poo isn't uncommon. And now I need to find a Hobby Lobby and look for that sign. That's awesome. I wonder why it's there, though. Tragic accident?

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : The most dangerous vehicle on the road.

I'm thinking the vans exist in their specific brand and state in order to make the youths more thankful every time they survive a ride. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure one of my earlier youth groups' van, The Tank [so named because it got clipped by a mini van and showed no damage while the minivan lost the right side-view mirror], died because its engine eventually melted in upon itself. Horrific demise, but spectacular at the same time. I hope someone started a group hum of "You Are His Cheeseburger" as it was towed off to populate a junk yard...

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Suddenly realizing you're more conservative than you used to be.

I think this is, in a way, a funny question for me, because the answer is yes, but at the same time no. In high school, I was one of those crazy stiff Christians who got more behind the judgment line than the loving others line. Then, I spent a year at a Christian college and met some pretty darned liberal Christians. At first I was appalled. Then I was curious. Then I let my standards slide because I was trying to be one of the cool liberal Christians. Since that frosh year, I've been swinging back around to some of my original stiffness, but am still about ten times more liberal than I used to be. Some of it is through habit, some of it is through disgust at what I used to be. So the answer is a resounding "sort of."

Like every job, the store has good days and bad days and days in between. I tend to enjoy it, most of the time. I love to talk to people about their crafts and help them figure things out. I enjoy hearing about VBS themes and Sunday School projects for stories. New spins on things I remember. The only thing that breaks my heart is when these same people pitch fits because they're doing something en masse for a church and can't get us to do exactly what they want, for whatever reason. Those are the bad days for me.

Being a Michael's employee [largely through necessity], I feel as though I should stick up for my corporate big house craft store...but I've never been in a Hobby Lobby. Not through professional snobbery, but rather through never having actually seen one. I feel dirty now. And a little sad.

I can't say I've ever noticed a Dad-bashing father's day sermon, but I have to say this: When you ended with "What say you?" all I could do was picture you, as Aragorn, standing in the tunnels under the mountain on the way to the massive battle, hollering up at a whole bunch of duty-shirking dads [green and translucent like the traitorous masses of ghosties in the film]. "WHAT SAY YOU?!" Seriously, awesome.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Let's have a VBS-tastic summer!

You've talked snacks. You've talked crafts. You've talked themes. Those are, in fact, the core of the VBS world. What I want to hear about now is the music. Old standbys are great--Deep and Wide, I Love Jesus shout outs, Lord's Army and my mother's favorite "Father Abraham"--but what about bringing in praise and hand signs and wacky praise leaders? While my mother cannot lead music, she was our MC and whenever that woman raised her hat, the room would go silent...or else. Then she'd pass the reigns over [generally to one of the more musically inclined moms or a group of musically gifted youths] to inspire the children to reflect upon their Lord's power and majesty through wacky kids praise and action songs. Honestly, I cannot recall going to a VBS not run and organized by my mother, so I'd love to hear from and about others.

Actually, I have two blogs, one for books: http://nwittynpretty.blogspot.com/ and one for brain vomit, random thoughts, whatever ends up happening, really: http://closetrecital.blogspot.com/ With the book one, I haven't gotten around to reading your book, since I've been following the site and I foisted it almost immediately upon my mother. Since we live in the same house, however, it won't be hard to get my hands on it again.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Feeling embarrassed for VBS programs that don’t have bouncy things.

I have honestly never been to or seen a VBS with a bouncy castle. I feel somewhat left out. Oh well. We just had crazy outdoor relays and water days and story days where my momma [the world's best VBS leader, I don't care what Chadder the Chipmunk says] would black out the narthex so that we could pretend we were in the ark with the single high window still open. Or when she would ducttape two black tarps together and then to the floor with a pair of fans at the back turned on high so the blew them up and we could go in and listen to Jonah tell us about his time in the whale. Or when we made the walls of Jericho out of paper grocery bags and old newspaper. Or the tunnel out of cardboard boxes! ...man, I really miss VBS.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Starting a Christian Blog.

Best Quote, I'm pretty sure of my day thus far: Blogging, like any task that can be done in your underwear, is not meant to be measured. Seriously. But beware, future bloggers--Christian themed or not! With great power [which resides in knowledge, which we all know you know you have] comes great responsibility [Hollywood told me so]. So handle your writings wisely or else someone might carjack your uncle. And don't start fights. [Good guest post, sah!]

Yeah, I'm a bit of a scifi fan [note the lack of "syfy"], and love SG1, appreciated Atlantis, and adore Eureka. So I tried Battlestar. Several times. It always seemed that I landed on a really creepy sex scene or preparations therefore. So I don't like BSG. I'll stick with my happy go-lucky SG1 [beware of at least the pilot, Children of the Gods] and Eureka. But now Eureka has that one guy--a doctor?--from BSG joining the cast and I am wary.

Communal awkwardness should be destroyed with fire. I've definitely been sitting there with a group of friends partaking in some fun movie and then BAM nudity/sex scene. Being the good group of kids we are, everyone does their best to avert their eyes from the screen [or at least pretend] while managing to not look at each other. Either that, or they go with the awkward giggle and hide their face in a pillow [admittedly, I'm pretty sure that's just a girl]. Fortunately, I've not had anybody turn against me for my movie choices that may or may not have included such moments. But I repeat. Communal awkwardness should be destroyed with fire.
